remedies for constipation.

I have suffered from I.b.s for about fifteen years now.Just lately it is more constipation than anything else. When I go I don’t seem to go enough and it is so uncomfortable.

I have tried fybrogel, satsumas, apples, bananas, buscopan, grapes. And then my sister-in law told me tonight to try a teaspoon full of baking soda in a quarter of a cup of warm water.Id never heard of this remedy before. So tonight I tried it and within an hour I needed to go.

I went quite a bit, maybe not quite enough, but it was progress.

I thought I would pass this on to other sufferers.

This I.b.s is exhausting.Ive got to the stage where I just want to stay indoors.

I was in a shop on Monday and got bit of a tummy ache and a feeling that I might need to go.

I then had a bad panic attack and drove home quickly in tears without buying anything.

Yes, baking soda can help with making you go. I know, because I have IBS -d and am quite sensitive even to bicarbonate amounts in bottled water. But baking soda can really reduce stomach acid levels, so it could have negative effects for digestion if used too frequently.

Also watch out for anything else taken such as indigestion remedies. or PPI's, because there's a horrible situation if too much alkaline stuff is taken in, called "milk alkali syndrome". That can be caused by mixing too many things which have an alkaline effect within a short space of time. Sometimes that can happen when people take baking soda as well as indigestion/PPI remedies.

Sometimes a coffee can stimulate a bowel movement, and so can exercise. But with an IBS kind of constipation you might need something stronger. Have you tried psyllium husk or flax seeds soaked overnight? Fibre supplements need water drunk with them or during the day.

Yes, it's depressing when IBS interferes with our everyday lives. I hate it for that!

Just checking, but are you in the UK?

Holland and Barrett sell psyllium husks, also Amazon, "Buy Wholefoods Online" (I bought something there once, so they're a reputable company) Or you could get them from a local health food shop?

I think it's more likely to find that in a wholefood shop or something, than an ordinary supermarket like Tesco's, Aldi, etc. I haven't bought that myself. I have the opposite problem....lol

baking powder will act like a laxative. Have you tried prebiotics. I have IBS-C I have started using Bimuno powder. It has sorted my bowels into a better rhythm, it takes a while to get the balance right. Also lots of fluids, avoid too much carbs such a bread, biscuits etc. I also stuck to the same breakfast of rolled oaks, sultanas, banana and Bimuno powder and occasional prune if a bit slow. 😊

Have you tried brown rice? If ever I get constipated I eat that. (usually have the opposite issue though so brown rice is a treat for me) It seems to have a very healthy effect, even more than veggies.

I also used to find carrots helped. And apples, but they are high Fodmap. Oranges too and oranges are low Fodmap

Milled flax seeds are better for you than the whole seed as the goodness is inside the seed. Not the golden linseed so much though for help with constipation.
