IBS and bad breath.

I have had constipation my whole life and i am 40 now. I recently meet a specialist who suggested that I have IBS after running some test. He adviced me to drink plenty of water and use Movicol and Siblin(an atificial fiber). I now drink more that 3 litters of water everyday and my bowle movement is 80% more regular. I also do alot of exercise such as lifting weights which really helps. I do not have any cramps except when i eat bread, which i do not now. My only problem is the bad breath which i experience all day and gets worse when i eat sweets or dairy. My dentist say i have no dental issue that can cause that. I also have try eyes. My bad breath worsens when i have not so frequent movements bowle movements. I have tried enemas and salt water flush. The salt water flush helps sometimes. How can i have a normal breath living with IBS?

The question is what is the root cause of your gut problems. Have underlying (systemic) diseases already been ruled out / examined in the past?

Hi Thank you for your reply. I have no other health complication and I have done several blood test including an breathing test to see if I have bacteria over growth and they all came negative. I have had digestive problems since 2006. My body cannot digest certain foods.

Sorry I also have lactose intolerance. My doctor saw that in my last blood test.

Along side my ‘dodgy’ bowel problems I have indigestion & reflux. I often have a horrible taste in my mouth & bitter taste. All connected think. I take peppermint oil capsules. I think they help a little. Quite a nice taste when I burp 🤣. I also take omeprazole for the reflux. I worry that I have bad breath. Always brushing teeth & mouth washing.

Is this connected to acid reux my mum has this same symptoms

I have exactly the same and the bitter taste is worse when my IBS is in major flare up as it is now. I find sucking a mint helps although try & avoid eating too many sugar free ones as the sweetener used in them has a laxative effect which then triggers my IBS, fine balancing game :D

The whole balance mechanism of the gut....affects everything between mouth and bottom....Peppermint is a carminative.....it releases trapped air from both ends.

That air is often foul smelling if you have poor fermentation...i.e. a reaction between sugar and yeast....healthy gut flora stops bad fermentation.

Reducing acid causes bad fermentation too.

Consider using fermented foods...like kimchi...sauerkraut...because they not only kill bad yeast in the gut but cannot ferment any longer because they have already broken the process....ginger tea...of even raw ginger...another winner on bad breath good gut...avoid sugar at all costs...peppermint sweets is a no no...use optima aloe vera digestive enzymes (amazon) for about a month to restores bile and normal movement and digestion...then keep away from yeast and sugar.

To tighten up the junctions in the bowel after you reduce the yeast use cranberry juice or pomegranate juices...the bowel looks like a cracked mud lake when its loose....which allows yeast and sugar into the deeper layers...drinking cranberry closes these together protects against inflammation....

Lastly change you diet to include more fibre...like green bananas...good bacteria needs fibre to thrive...proelytic enzymes breaks down inflammation...switch from omega 6 to omega 3...always do this regime after antibiotics...yoghurts need to be sugar free...prebiotics...probiotics to restore.

From my experiences everything between the top of my head and the tip of my toes 😕

Thanks for all the ideas.

I Googled "optima aloe vera digestive enzymes (amazon)" and I can't find the optima brand at Amazon, or anywhere else. I don't know anything about it, does it matter what brand I get? What should I look for if I get another brand?

opin in reply to Nothing_but_books

Where do you live? I got mine in a local store today.

in reply to Nothing_but_books

Sorry the brand name was changed to Aloe Pura

Heres what the bottle looks like search on Amazon

vitalabo.com/optima-natural...

Bromelain is very good at breaking down fibrin as it is a proelytic enzyme this reduces scarring and helps lower inflammation.

Thank you so much. I think low stormach acid has been my biggest problem. How do I increase my stormach acid to prevent fermentation? Any ideas?

grumpyold profile image
grumpyold in reply to opin

I find that kimchi helps improve my stomach acid. It's an acquired taste though.

in reply to opin

Actually greens like spinach and broccoli seem to do this naturally…any salt with chloride too such as magnesium chloride…but the best by far is ACV…teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in half a tumbler of water…serious low acid such as SIBO issues may require betaine HCL… another chloride…this increases hydrochloric acid levels…the biggest problem with reflux is not acid levels but a poor functioning LES…lower esophageal sphincter…melatonin supplements will help…as will using a half teaspoon of calcium chloride right after a meal as this makes the les shut quite quickly and firmly.

Wow Thanks a lot. I use ACV and it works well for me but I do not use it often unfortunately. Do you have any ideas on how I can eliminate fermended food from body?

Cut sugar out…add raw ginger into your routine…juice carrots…celery…detox with vitamin C…and if you can NAC…raw garlic will kill fermentation in minutes.

I too have the exact same issues with bad breath and IBS-C and want to know what works. The suggestions were great and I just wanted to know if you tried any of them. Can you please provide a follow up?

in reply to IBSconcerns

I have used these off and on….with success…my problem has always been caused by antibiotics…most not only remove bad bacteria…but the good ones too…so bloating and gas often occur if you eat yeasty foods with sugar …it’s fermentation every time….

Good gut bacteria needs to be rebuilt…..hence fermented foods which have already burnt off sugars along with fiber(green bananas or porridge) and probiotics…good luck.

I will give it a try. Thank you so much!

Also do you suggest prebiotics along with the probiotics?? Or will the probiotics alone suffice?

in reply to IBSconcerns

Well prebiotics act like fertiliser to probiotics....they are only specialised plant fibres...but if you keep things simple and undestand the basic idea...you take probiotics...which need fibre hence green bananas or porridge....fibre feeds probiotics...so they go hand in hand....the fermented foods reduce the likelihood of gas and bloating caused by fermentation of yeast and sugar...as do garlic , ginger and ACV.

If you have loose junctions....these are deeper folds of mucosa which trap bad bacteria and are harder to clean out....this needs things like cranberry juice and or pomegranate juice...these tighten up junctions and forces bacteria out of the junctions .excellent for bladder conditions too...

Finally improving health of the mucosal lining....cabbage , slippery elm , dgl licorice....this protects the linings too.

Try not to use antibiotics at all....better to use natural antimicrobials...like andrographis...olive leaf extract...look into adaptogens...they do work and less likely to throw things out of kilter.

Thank you for the explanation. It also makes sense as to why I experience the pain in my upper left side after eating a sandwich or yeast. I didn’t realize sugar is a culprit as well. I appreciate you’re feedback. Thanks again!

Interesting, "andrographis", never heard of it till now 🙂 Might give it a try in future but first want to speak with a gastroenterologist at an university hospital (appointment on the 12th of December) about treating a suspected intestinal methane overgrowth (IMO). I'm now trying boswellia serrata for alleviating my symptoms but andrographis could be an useful addition if boswellia proves to be not effective enough. Just started with boswellia so can't say yet how helpful it is in my situation but it seems that I have a little more energy since a few days therefore I suspect it does something good in my intestines.

in reply to Meleber

Yes I would consider andrographis if boswellia proves unhelpful...

Another is ashitaba...(tomorrows leaf)

Did you consider aloe vera and slippery elm bark.....these are both first responders....they settle inflammation quicker than most other adaptogens and have a higher success rate....

Inflammation settles with cutting out refined sugar...switching away from gluten and omega 6 oils...choose omega 3...

Look at tumeric, ginger too.

This may actually be caused because you do not make enough stomach acid....and if you are on PPI then you allow mild bugs to get past the protective barrier and make their way into the lower machinery....sugar and yeast do the rest....

Eating foods with garlic and adding apple cider vinegar before eating may improve things.....increase foods that increase stomach acid slowly over time....spinach....rocket salad....everyone is slightly different so you need to use trial and error to find your way back to a happier digestion process....best wishes.

Just started with andrographis, one capsule this afternoon and as from tomorrow one capsule twice a day (morning and afternoon). In first instance as an addition to boswellia but when the small plastic container with boswellia is empty, in about two weeks I guess, I think I will just only continue with andrographis, if my body can tolerate this natural product of course.

in reply to Meleber

Okay ....just a thought....you will not know what gave you thebetter result taking two or more products....i never used more than one capsule aday with andrographis.... noticed several things...my loose teeth tightened up...my mucus reduced...no spots....good luck with the protocol...let us know how it went.

I agree with you that it's maybe better to take just one product a time so decided to continue with solely the boswellia serrata and also reduce the amount I take currently. I'll try just one capsule a day instead of two.

It's probably the best to start with the andrographis in about two weeks, when I'm out of boswellia. And I should start with just one capsule andrographis too, start low and go slow. Thanks for the reminder 🙂

Could you tell me how much andrographis one capsule contains? The one I bought contains 400mg andrographis paniculata extract, with a minimum of 10% andrographolides.

it's not a drug like prescription medication, it's a natural product / OTC you can buy yourself. Where do you live?

in reply to Meleber

Yes I use Swanson 400 mg plus 10% extract...its enough....also find swanson products better in olive leaf extract.

I use bitters, HCL, and digestive enzymes, also cut down on my size of meal, and never eat after 6pm. Also eat a lot of veggies or a balanced diet, sleep a lot and exercise regularly.
