I don’t know what I can or can’t eat anymore!?

Hi, a few weeks ago I had the worse diarrhoea ever! I was sick once, but the diarrhoea and stomach pains lasted for over a week. Which I thought was a stomach bug. I didn’t eat much as felt poorly too. After the week my tummy still felt a little sensitive, but now 3 weeks later I’ve got really bad watery diarrhoea again! Ive never had it this bad. I’m not eating anything different, I don’t feel worried… (well except this is making me feel a little anxious as I actually feel like I could crap myself in public!!) I don’t know if this is IBS Food Intolerance Tummy Bug????

I’d be very grateful for any advice or help or thoughts please 💩

Has your GP given you a diagnosis of IBS? If not suggest you see him/her then you can start to get yourself sorted. Good luck🍀

No I’ve not had any diagnoses, as I just thought it was a tummy bug. But getting into the doctors lately is a mission in itself! I was thinking about trying to get an appointment tomorrow. Thank you for your reply ☺️

I have IBSC but over the last month have been going down hill. Just don't feel well. Lots of wind, cramps and no energy. 5 days ago I had 2 days of diarrhoea, took 2 imodium and not been since but only half an appetite my acid reflux has gone MAD so I'm afraid to eat. I can't stay on my feet for more than a few minutes. I don't know what I'm dealing with too. I will see Doc on Tuesday IF I'm well enough to get there. The hot weather won't help.

Hi Edgar77, sorry to hear you are feeling so rough at present. I'm not doing so well myself either. I think like you say, this weather doesn't help. I hope you can get to the doctors on Tuesday and they can give some help.

Sounds like your doctor is as good as mine!

Hi Edgar77, the symptoms you are describing may indicate that you were constipated and the diarrhoea may have been overflow. Liquid that moved around the blockage. This would account for the wind and cramps. Taking the Imodium if that was the case would stop the cramping and explain why you haven’t been since. If you can’t pass the waste products of digestion one way they will eventually go the other way (not exactly but this is the easiest way to describe it) which would account for why your acid reflux has gone mad and you feel so weak. Constipation, a build up of waste products can make you feel so rough. However at this point self diagnosis may not be enough or wise. Please see your doctor who should do an abdominal examination to determine if you are constipated or not. The heat will not help so drink water little and often, very often. Don’t take anymore Imodium or laxatives but do try and eat some high fibre natural foods. If you are struggling stewed apple with a little sugar if needed, hot or cold might help?

This had crossed my mind, but up until the diarrhoea I was going more or less every day (with difficulty) and the help of fibergel. Still had awful wind and cramps. I suspect a bacterial imbalance. To update I have been a little today 4 days later ,but I was not eating much anyway. I can't eat apple it is a big no on the fodmap diet. At least the acid reflux has improved. I will see a Doc tomorrow. Hope I'm well enough to get there. Probably a waste of time anyway. They always seem pushed for time and I have so many issues I need to discuss. I will at least mention some of them.

Is the Fodmap diet helping you ?

As a celiac I was used to gluten free anyway. The dietician advised lactose free as my bones are thin I need the nutrients from cows milk. She gave me a list of do and don't fruit and veg which has helped. But I must start to reintroduce foods now and am finding it hard. Would rather just stick to the safe foods.

Hi Edgar77, I am a little confused about the advice given “The dietician advised lactose free as my bones are thin I need the nutrients from cows milk. “ Are you taking lactose free dairy ( there is a good range available now) or have you excluded dairy from your diet?

I am taking lactose free dairy

That helped me too and I can now tolerate a little ordinary cheddar cheese. If my D is turning to C I have milk and that usually sorts it out.

Hi Friendsdontlie, it does sound like it could be the start of IBS. Like Linley says you should see a doctor to get blood and stool tests done if nothing else. You can have a tummy bug which can sometimes lead to Post Infectious IBS. So best to get some help from GP if you can. Equally it might have been something you ate, which might have been off or on the turn, or not cooked propertly. Or you may have just caught a bug from someone and it took a while to go! You have come to the right place, everyone is very understanding on this site and you can ask us anthing you want. Maureen.

Hi everyone thank you for all your kind replies! ❤️ Who knew there’s so many of us!? Why does our body do this to us!?! I’m going to try some Buscopan today, I had one tablet last night, which seemed to help, I think!? My tummy still feels very sensitive though… keeps making sounds and churning over. I thought that was just my tummy getting back to ‘normal’!?

Also has the menopause affected anyone…. I think I’m peri-menopausal and have 100s of different things happening to my body! 😭 I feel like I’m falling apart … I’m only in my 40s!!! Also thinking about taking HRT… but that’s a totally different group I need to talk to! 🤪(sorry to the men out there)

Are there any special diets anyone keeps to? Or is it an individual thing?

After 10 days of watery diarrhoea you really need to do a stool sample. This happened to me recently. I suffer from IBS and this was 100 times worse, with stomach cramps and generally feeling completely wiped out. My results came back in 2 days. I had campylobacter i.e. food poisoning. You can be prescribed antibiotics if it hasn't cleared up. Good luck.

Watery diarrhoea is usually the sign of a viral infection. As you’ve had a recurrence, I think it essential that you get a doctor’s appointment. IBS is a diagnosis of exception, after you’ve ruled out everything else, so the starting point is definitely a GP visit. It’s not unusual for gut infections to recur, but it’s worth checking out.

Hi Friensdontlie, I am in my 60’s and have suffered with digestive problems for many years. D more often than C but I have experienced both. At one point I could not eat if I wanted to go out as eating triggered D. I have done numerous exclusion diets and had various tests over the years that didn’t help. I realised a long time ago that there was a spice that made things worse but isolating that spice proved difficult and for me only eating plain foods took the pleasure of eating away. Then a couple of years ago I had yet another round of skin tests ( I have multiple allergies/sensitivities) and they added a test in showing I was sensitive to Cinnamon. What a revelation and of course I avoid cinnamon as far as possible but it is in more than you would think. The moral of this story is if, and it is a big IF, you can find what you are sensitive to, and it could be a combination of things, and if you can avoid them your problems may improve. Getting your microbiome (gut bacteria) healthy is a vital part of recovery if you have IBSD or C. There is so much written on this subject and it can be at best confusing and at worst misleading and it is a subject most GP’s are not much interested in, in my experience. I have found bone broth (home made) makes a huge difference for me along with avoiding processed products and increasing probiotic foods like sauerkraut and high fibre foods like fruit and vegetables not bran or grains. Sauerkraut etc. are an acquired taste and I found them difficult to eat at first but love them now. I am where I am now, which is so much better, through years of trial and error and lots of research. I have had very little useful advice from the medical profession ( and I am medically trained) but many uncomfortable and invasive investigations over the years. Keep it simple and keep a note of what you are putting into your body and when your symptoms get worse or better. Try natural real foods, rather than commercially made “remedies” and over the counter medications, and you may find this also helps your transition through the menopause as there are foods that help and those that hinder. Remember we are what we eat. Please do take advice from your GP, nurse practitioner etc. as they will look to see if something else is causing your problems. Good luck.

It could be an intolerance. You may have suddenly become intolerant to one of the top 3. Dairy, yeast & wheat. Bad enough if you have an intolerance to one, but very difficult if you get all three. I hope you are sticking to the low Fodmap foods. I can eat some on it but nowhere near all of them. I can't eat oats, fruit and red meat. I have several intolerances and they can be hard to discover. I'm allergic to dextrose. Its in lots of foods. So my diet is limited. But to avoid a constant bad stomach I happily give up foods i like. You need to do a food diary and an exclusion diet to see what is causing you So many problems. Remember though, what you eat today may not affect you for up to 3 days. Good luck.
