Movicol - slow transit constipation

Hi all,

Does anyone know if Movicol is good for slow transit constipation?

I have only just discovered Movicol (after 6 years of struggling with slow transit constipation) and it seems like a much better option that other laxatives?

Does anyone know if it’s ok to use long term and the body doesn’t become dependent?

Any experiences (good or bad) anyone has had I would love to hear..

Many thanks

Unfortunately it never worked for me. I too have slow transit constipation along with a very weak pelvic floor. Tried Milk of Magnesia but that didn't work too well. I'm on a low fiber diet. The only thing that helps is I take two stool softeners (Colace) Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Early morning. Saturday Morning I drink the Starbucks double shots that you can buy in a store or convenience store. After drinking two of those it helps me go and alot comes out. I still have to take the Senna (Gericot) Saturday night. Then on Sunday early morning I make strong brewed coffee and put six packs of Stevia in each gut. Stevia has Rebiana in the ingredients which helps "move things along" better than sugar or splenda. I get a 64 oz bottle of apple Juice. Along with the coffee it works. I'm done going within an hour or two. I only take Senna once a week (it's a stimulant laxative but natural ingredients unlike Miralax (Movicol).

Doesn't work for me. It requires a lot of fluid and the problem with slow transit is that more fluid is reabsorbed in the colon because of the slow transit and can cause these types of laxatives to block you up even more. That's just my experience.

Hi. Iv been on movicol for the past 16 years twice a day and sometimes a lot more and it’s the only thing that works for me. Iv not been diagnosed with slow transit but IBS C and visceral hypersensitivity. Tbh I couldn’t live without it xx

Hi Kim,

Thanks for your reply.

Have you ever tried senna as a comparison? Doctors say Movicol is a more of s safe option long term then Senna. Have you always used the same dosage or have you found with time your body needs a stronger dose? I’m new to Movicol so a little apprehensive, but it can’t be more of a risk to the bowel than senna so I’m going to run with it.

Yes Iv tried senna aswell but that mainly gives me cramps so I don’t take them now. I take 1 movicol in the morning and 1 at night, if I feel like I’m getting bunged up then I do take more but then always go back to the 2 a day. I also take 1 bisacodyl a day as I was recommended it. You do become dependant on them but I don’t ever stick with the higher dose. I would rather take the 2 sachets a day then not go to the toilet at all.

If they don’t agree with you then you can always come off them. They are just for relief and hopefully to get your system into a routine.

Good luck

One or two bisacodyl during the day, I cut them in half. Additionally I use cascara Sagrada to keep the fecal material moving through my colon.
