Feeling frustrated with doctors

Spoke to my doctors yesterday about my prescription for oramorph which I take along with pregablin for pain predominant ibs. I felt as though I was asking for gold the way he spoke to me. At first he said that's not a usual medication for ibs as though I had prescribed it myself & not by a top consultant, I then had to explain to him that the ibs was triggering nerve pain hence the need for oramorph then was quizzed on how much I take, then he made me out to be a liar by saying we'll if that's the amount you are taking you should have some left! I am totally disillusioned with the whole nhs system at the moment. Why should I have to fight for something that takes away the pain that has took them 3 years to diagnose! They should try it sometime! 😤😤😡

Your GP is only following official guidelines. It is unusual to be prescribed Oramorph for IBS/IBD because the major side effect of Oramorph is constipation, which would cause more pain. (I am playing a bit of Devil's Advocate here because I, also, take Oramorph for my pain, along with a multitude of other stuff). At least your GP was willing, although reluctant, to prescribe the Oramorph eventually. Good luck, keep well and stay safe.

I've had pregablin for my IBS C(didn't do much) but I've never heard of oromorph being given for IBS, it's an opoid and opiods cause constipation can make IBS even more painful. I'm trying Nefopam at the moment and it's working most of the time

I'm sorry that this was his response. Is there another doctor in the practice you can speak to if he tries to stop you from having it in the future? Obviously I wasn't there so I don't know, but it is possible that this reaction was because this is an opioid, which is addictive. However, if the consultant recommended it then it should be made available to you.

I hear a lot about “oh oramorph causes constipation” and isn’t recommended for ibd/ibs, I am prescribed methadone for pain relief as after my many operations I’m still having severe pain active Crohn’s and colitis they also prescribe a medication naloxegol which reverses the opioid effect that causes constipation, I’m sorry you had to go through all that with your gp, yes it’s their job to advise you but if you have had this medication prescribed by a consultant then really has no right to put you through more stress and anxiety to stay pain free if we ever are and that’s coming from someone who’s currently in hospital again with another excruciating flare, good luck and I hope next time your process of getting your medication is much easier, also if you are suffering from constipation with oramorph enquire naloxegol it is a very good laxative used along side opiates x
