Trouble with eating fat in the morning

Hi I wonder if anyone else suffers with very bad stomach pains, and having to go immediately to the toilet when they eat fat in the morning. So by fat I mean, egg yolk, cheese, yogurt, peanut butter, avocado, butter literally anything like this. I do struggle as well with fibre food, so struggle with breakfast ideas, oats are a no as well! Anyone else please, and any suggestions for something that lines your stomach and is gentle.

Hi, I've found through trial and error that a lot of breakfast food triggers my IBS. I tend to stick with brown bread, toasted, no butter or any spread, with a banana sliced up on top, natural yoghurt (usually add some soft fruit eg peaches), and that seems to be fine. I can eat a small amount of egg, but it has to be very well cooked. You could also try grilled tomatoes/mushrooms (no added fat) as they're quite gentle. With peanut butter, try looking for a natural one with no added oil, as they're much easier to digest. Check the ingredients on yoghurt, a lot of them have added artificial sweeteners which are known triggers. I would suggest asking your GP about getting your gall bladder checked and being tested for Bile Acid Malabsorption - this is often missed and causes similar symptoms to IBS.

I agree. When I started on the low fodmap and fat exclusion eating (wasnt sure whether I was affected by gallstones or IBS or both) I cut out all those except peanut butter and sometimes jam. No margarine or olive spreads on toast, just marmite/vegemite, tomatoes . And fruit (mostly kiwi for high fibre and vit c)and banana, rhubarb. After about 2/3 months I could take oats, low fodmap cereal, chia, yoghurt. I still dont eat egg unless its in baking (e.g healthy muffins) but thats mainly because I just dont want the nausea if it still affects me. Also avoid caffeine and fruit juice isn't recommended either except maybe orange for some people. Someone also recommended 2 glasses of water with lemon before eating.

Hi. I was told for years I had IBS. My issue was diarrhoea not long after eating. I managed to figure out if I ate anything slightly fatty it was worse. Fast forward many years I was going to the toilet a lot but ironically gaining weight. I lived on anti diarrhoea tablets. When I mentioned how bad it was getting my doctor referred me. I had a host of tests including a colonoscopy, bloods, stools and a thing called a sehcat scan. The latter diagnosed bile acid malabsorption. It’s quite common if you have your gallbladder removed or issues with one. I have a stone but further scans showed it was causing an issue and it hasn’t grown in the 10 years I’ve had it. But I also have nafld and a high lipid profile (fats in blood like cholesterol, gamma gt, triglycerides). Basically with bile acid malabsorption after eating the left over bile should be reabsorbed by the body. In my case it doesn’t and reaches the colon, where it shouldn’t be, so the body flushes it out hence the urgency and diarrhoea. Certain foods need more bile to digest like fat, seeds, leaves, skins, so I have to limit those. So even healthy foods like salads are a big no no for me. I am now on bile acid sequestrant medication which helps. I’m told about a third of people with IBS actually have bile acid malabsorption (sometimes called bile salt malabsorption or bile acid diarrhoea, but it’s all the same). I’m ok with white carbs like bread, potatoes, rice, chicken, white fish, bananas. I can’t eat anything fatty, no eggs, little dairy, even good fats like salmon go through me. When finally diagnosed they did a vitamin check and I was so deficient in so many I am now prescribed B12, D, iron, folate, potassium and omega as I can’t maintain healthy levels. Ask for a refer to gastro as I suffered for years and my doctor just kept saying IBS and lose weight (I wasn’t overweight back then). When I got diagnosed I got an apology as they had never heard of it. I’ve since realised by joining a Facebook group that there are many people with it and all day their doctor didn’t know about it. Shocking.

My ibs is always bad in the morning after breakfast. My Dr said it was because it had been resting all night and then breakfast kick starts it in to action. I have to be careful what I eat for dinner. Once you start eating in the morning everything moves downwards if you get my meaning. I have no gallbladder so try and maintain a lower fat eating regime. Not easy. Why is it that the food we cannot tolerate is always so nice! Not fair Take care x
