Summary of TV programme about IBS

Andann asked for a summary.

It was an interesting program and not sensationalist at all.

It was fronted by a GP (doctor) who feels helpless with regard to her patients with IBS. she was specifically looking at 3 different treatments plus a new test that could identify IBS rather than another gut problem

First-person who was in her 20's has IBS since she was 16 years and she can not cope with the pain, she was put on a 12-week course of hypnotherapy at one of the hospitals that specialise in IBS. Eventually, she was able to reduce the pain...it has a 70percent success rate but needs to be done via a specialist. It is to go into the unconscious mind.

The second person was in her early 60's and said at times she thought what's the point of not being able to live your life. She was put on Low FODMAP diet and reintroduction under specialist guidance again had a positive outcome for her. They emphasised you need help to do the Low FODMAP diet as it is very difficult. Again it has a 70 percent success rate)

Third-person again in his 60's knew stress was his trigger, He was given a course of yoga which again eventually worked for him. (looking at the exercises she was doing I would end up having to see a back specialist)

The doctor spoke to someone who had IBS for over 30 years with terrible bouts of diarrhea, she was given a drug that is not for IBS but an anti-sickness drug called ONDANSTON that has an effect on the bowel, she said it was the magic pill. They are also looking at how other drugs already available could help with IBS.

Another research center is looking at stool samples and the gas they give off that a specialist machine then finds out if it is IBS or some other gut disease as many patients who get no relief from their symptoms believe it can not just be IBS.

What was interesting was they brought the 3 people together who said IBS is not something you talk about as it's so personal. So many Drs still do not understand how debilitating it is for individuals.

If I have written anything that was not correct I apologise but I made notes as best I could when watching.

I think you summarised that pretty well. For me the most important part was when the 3 sufferers got together and all wished the condition is taken more seriously as so many people have no idea how debilitating it can be. I agreed with the one lady completely when she said she couldn`t see the point of living when you are unable to do anything that you want to do

I asked my GP for a referral to dietician for FODMAP a few weeks ago he said he will refer me but didn’t think I would get an appointment!Giving it another week then will chase it up.

Just get the app from Monash and make a start. It does help to have expert advice but the important thing is to make a start and later to reintroduce some foods which is the tricky part.

I was annoyed that the presenter said several times that the Fodmap diet is very complicated and very difficult to follow. It isn`t! I recommend the book The Complete Low Fodmap Diet by Sue Shepherd (she developed the diet in Australia). Far better to give it a go on your own that wait months for referral to a dietitian. I fyou are a teacher you are intelligent enough to educate yourself about it!

Thanks for doing this great summary of the programme last night. It was very kind of you, I am sure our friends from across the pond and elsewhere will be grateful too.

I was really interested in the poo test, I think that would be great. I also might ask my GP about ondansetron.

Thanks again for this.

I knew my teaching skills may come in handy one day outside the classroom.

Thanks bookeater. That's great to know that a medical person is trying to help. When our Delta lockdown is over in Auckland I m taking part in a study of how food moves through our systems. Will let you when the results are ready.

That's meant to be' will let you know ' we have to refrain from eating from late night, then the next morning have a monitor strapped to our stomachs, and then eat.

Ondastatan is the drug they give me for nausea when I go to the emergency room. It helps my nausea greatly. I go to ER about 4 times a year. They give me hydrmorpnone or Diladad. It breaks a pain cycle. I go there so often some recognize me. The last doctor apologized for the fact that drs just don’t know much help for IBS.

Is the nausea linked to the IBS?

Thanks bookeater. Very helpful

All the IBS sufferers watched this, but I wanted my friends and family to watch it. In the hope that they would understand me, but as I expected no one did. If they cared they would have made a point of watching it.

My husband often puts things on Facebook about IBS but everyone just ignores it! He put a link on Facebook about this program but only our son liked it!

People react differently to other people’s medical problems it doesn’t mean they don’t care it’s just something they wouldn’t look at .

Why not, I would look something up if somebody put a comment on about something they had to cope with, just out of curiousity, if nothing else. After all you must be bored to be looking at Facebook in the first place. Basically, people are selfish and only care about themselves.

Yes. It's a natural animal instinct to avoid those of our own species that are sick. As humans we do it mainly by denial or simply not looking. Evolution has taught us that sickness is contagious.

What a shame they never watched it. I had acid reflux but watched the program and it was very interesting

A very good summary of the programme which I did watch. I am debating whether or not to ask my doctor if I can try the drug ONDANSTON. Has anyone on here tried it? I have read through all the side effects which can be caused by the drug which seem to consist of all the things I am currently suffering from which would be a bit of a catch 22 situation.

Very interesting but one major problem for me.. all the patients had IBS D, so IBS C was barely mentioned. It’s actually much harder to treat ( as I know to my cost). The new drug mentioned is definitely for IBS D as it constipates. So mostly good but unbalanced from my point of view..?

I didn’t think of that.

The hypnotherapy really appealed to me, if only it was easy to access. I've tried low fodmap with little success, I didn't feel like i had to cut much out from what I usually eat. Apart from wheat and anything containing garlic or onions. I didn't experience a definite improvement so it's hard to work any triggers out!

Yes....I watched the programme. I thought it was very good but no one mentioned Mebeverine (Colofac). Before my prescription I couldn’t leave my home due to uncontrollable diarrhoea. I still have to watch what I eat....some FODMAP foods even set it off. But the Mebeverine has changed my life thank God. And Ondansetron! Wow! Brilliant little anti sick pill.....
