Interesting article. Thanks for sharing. Although they may have come up with one reason some people might suffer from IBS, my gut feeling is that IBS is multifaceted and has many different causes.

My frustration with research into IBS and other diseases and syndromes without a cure is that there seems to be millions of individual bits of research conducted, all of which say 'further studies are needed'. However, there is no one person or organisation responsible for ensuring that the next step is taken in the research and to coordinate all the different research teams within countries or across the globe to ensure that research leads to outcomes for patients and fast (just like how the vaccine was developed).

Yes I have noticed that too, it's incredibly frustrating. Keeping myself updated on new research is the only thing that is keeping me sane at the moment though

Absolutely agree Fencinggirl. I'm currently putting together a website of all the research I have found into IBS. I'll send out a post when I have finished. After that I have an ambition to compile a list of all the organisations globally currently working on IBS and if I can and if research teams are interested, to set up a forum where teams can discuss their work, share information and work collaboratively. I'll see if I can find an organisation already doing this, but if not I thought I'd set it up myself. If it works, it could be a model for research into other incurable diseases. I'm not sure if I can pull it off but there's no harm in trying.

Yes, that makes sense to me as I had a lot of antibiotics in my early to mid 50s , then over 10 years on PPIs (which I have now stopped taking) , then 2 lots of antibiotics for suspected H. Pylori. What made the difference is the combination of a clean out for a colonoscopy and low fodmap diet . Although I have always been keen on vegetables I eat lots more consistently now and way less fats and sugars. I hope we get to hear of their continued research.

That really is very interesting. I have been on proton pump inhibitors for years, for GERD. Have tried several times to come off them, or change for another antacid with no success. I think, looking back, that my irritable bowel did start some time after the GERD diagnosis. So there could be something in this. What to do about it though is another thing entirely!! It's a nasty thing to have and with the anxiety making world we live in, and its connection also to anxiety, there's no wonder its so prevalent. And now - all the public loos are closed, department stores closing down all over the place, where does one go when out and about.
