Just one thing

I have just been listening to Dr Michael Moseley's talk about gut health on BBC Radio 4 (UK). He was very interesting about the links between gut health, mental health and good bacteria, pro-biotics and fermented foods such as sauerkraut , kefir etc. He did say however be careful with introducing the fermented foods!

With IBS-D, I feel that fermented foods would be disasterous. Has anyone with IBS-D tried them please?

If fermented food releases histamine I wouldn't try it. Sauerkraut causes inflammation in my case, as with all histamine releasing food or medication.

I tried kefir a couple of years ago, just a tiny amount and had to run straight to the loo which I have never done with anything else, I tried it because I thought it would help my IBS(D) not make it worse. It was such a small amount and such a quick response. Haven't touched the stuff since.

Thanks Chocoholick. I love chocolate too. How do you get on with choc in your diet?

I eat vegan chocolate. It's more expensive and harder to find milk type alternatives but some good options

Yes, I followed Jeanette Hyde’s Gut Makeover - a sort of gut reset- on my doctors advice. My gut feels better but it’s not a miracle cure. But I’m eating more whole foods, including ferments such as sauerkraut, kefir, unpasteurised cheese sets - a little each day. It’s certainly not made things worse but remember IBS is a very individual thing. The diet also includes 14 he fasting so no food after 7.00 pm until 9 am - this gives your gut a good rest period overnight.

Thanks Inksplat. I will look at the Gut Makeover you mention. Yes everyone is different. I have tried a 12 hour break but not for very long.

Jeanette Hyde did a podcast with Dr Rangan Chatterjee- sorry not sure of spelling - the podcast is called ‘feel better- Live More’ he does lots of interesting talks with different people - I think J Hyde’s was no 40. (2018)

If, as in my case, your worst problem is bloating, anything fermented is an absolute no no. And definitely NOT Fodmap either..!

Thanks Iggls. It’s a bit difficult to choose the worst prob 😂 but bloating is certainly one of them!

Some recent studies have shown probiotics not to helpful for ibs in majority of cases

Hi I've found Alflorex probiotic to be really helpful - its specifically designed for IBS. I suffer with alternating c & d plus horrendous flare ups in the past year due to SIBO.

They do say it can be helpful for up to 20% of people i think, so it is individual.

Hi there Oscarboscar. I have the symptoms of SIBO and at this time taking 2x20 mgs of Omeprazole for Esophagitis that was diagnosed by an endoscopy back in November. I am still having trouble with eating but have not lost my appetite although I have lost a lot of weight. I have a phone consultation appointment soon with a Gastroenterology Consultant and was hoping they would recognise and consider I might have SIBO as my doctor wasn't that helpful. I enjoy my food but usually after my evening meal 2 to 3 hours later I get an awful tight spasm feeling in my upper stomach and have to take my bra of as it feels tight and pressies where it hurts. Kind regards.

Hi Doris22. I've just seen a consultant & he's given me antibiotics for the SIBO which I have just finished. Must admit I do feel better but still suffering with reflux - both silent & acid. My understanding is that it all takes time to get back to normal but will have another meeting with the specialist to hopefully discuss this. I did read on this forum that SIBO will not go on it's own & if the source of it's occurrence isn't sorted it will reoccur. I've also read, on the forum, a rather long piece from a chemist Stuart24 - it's full of information & guidance. He is a fellow IBS sufferer so understands what's going on. If you can find it it's well worth a read. Kind regards.

Hi and thanks for taking the time to reply. I spoke the Gastroenterology Consultant today and he wants me to stop the Omeprazole and take an H2 Blocker. Similar he says to Zantac that has now been discontinued. Also wants a stool sample checked and ultrasound on my stomach. So it's a start and totally forgot to mention about SIBO. I do hope you get some improvement soon. Wouldn't it be great to just feel normal! Have you tried any of the H2 blockers? I found them much better than PPI's especially if you have food intolerance to some foods. With me it's grains and corn. Also found in the past that Gaviscon advance was a life saver when I had acid reflux. All the best. Would be great to know how you get on.

It will be wonderful when it happens. Fortunately I'm not on any meds at the moment other than Senocalm after I've eaten it seems to be helping a lot. When I felt really really poorly I was taking Omeprazole but stopped once I started to feel well. I take a few vitamins as after antibiotics & omeprazole I feel deficient in iron etc & they seem to keep me on good form. I am also following what Stuart24 has recommended - if I could find the link I would send it to you. Take care Doris22.

Would you have a link to this, I tried all sort of probiotics but they all made me worse including symprove. I did a stool test and had it looked over by an independent nutritionist and it seemed that my biome was in a pretty good state considering my diet!

I cannot find the link this minute but if i find it i will post. I remember it was the American society of Gastroenterologists that had said that they were now not recommending for everyone as a general rule, as they had not found evidence of it being helpful for most people
