Can IBS cause anaemia?

Brightlikeadiamond profile image

I have been diagnosed with IBS about three years ago. I’ve been experiencing lightheadedness for over a year which has now become worse. The Dr has requested blood tests to check for anaemia.

Has anyone here had lightheadedness or anaemia due to IBS?

Anaemia isn't an IBS symptom, however it is a symptom for coeliac disease if you are coeliac and consuming gluten, since in people with coeliac the absorption of iron can be blocked as I understand it. Hopefully the doctor is also checking you for coeliac, but best to ask them.

I was tested for coeliac disease when I got my IBS diagnosis and it was clear. Maybe they’ll check again when they do my bloods. Thanks for your help xjrs

I think there is a possibility if you have IBS-D, because high motility rate may reduce the opportunity for the gut to absorb iron. Unfortunately, there are a number of reasons for iron deficiency, so this would have to be tested. In the meantime, you could take supplements, but you would need to stop them at least 2 weeks before any blood test, or you might get a false result.

I have both IBSc and d. I’ll hold off and not change anything until my bloods are done so I’m not risking any false readings. I want to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible. Thanks Superzob you’ve been a good help.

Ive had a similar experience with lightedheadedness. In my case it was both a reaction to my ppi, and low blood pressure. If you can ,buy a cheap blood pressure monitor and check it.

Actually my dad has a blood pressure reader. I’ll give that a go. Thanks Kennydog.

Hi, I have suffered with ibs for over 20 years.Around 10 years ago they discovered I have iron deficiency anaemia.I have had every camera test available and no obvious cause for this.Personally I think my gut doesn’t absorb iron from my food due to the ibs malfunction. I could be wrong but it makes sense to me especially considering I have no other known cause for it.My ferretin level is currently 4 which is very low . I get tired and weak and sometimes a little breathless if I over exert myself. I can get lightheaded too. They treat it by giving me yearly iron infusions.Hope you get a diagnosis and get it resolved.xx

Hi Julie, form what you’re saying it makes sense to me too. Especially when they physically can’t find the issue. Iron infusions.....is that via a drip?

IBS is the bane of my life!

Thanks fir your reply, you’ve really helped.

Hey,no worries I find it comforting to know I’m not on my own with these issues. Not that I wish for anyone to be ill of course!Yes the infusion is given by drip direct into my arm.Only takes around 15 minutes but they keep you an hour or so to check you don’t react badly.Thankfully I have been fine n have been having them every year for past 8 years or so.Just hoping I get one soon with the covid.I could write a book on my ibs journey 😆 so don’t hesitate to ask if you have any more questions.xx
