Constipation

Have been on mebeverine for over two weeks now and haven’t been to the loo properly for nearly four days. Does mebeverine constipate you and if so for how long ?

Best regards

Shaun

Good morning sweetie, I have taken mebeverine for about 2 years now and I was never constipated on them, they are an antispasmodic and help with the spasms and pain but every body is different. Now I only take them if I have a flare up, which is more often than not. Oh the joys of IBS eh, hope your ok hun Love and 🤗 xxxx

Hi Shanunine,

Yeah, I have the exact same reaction to mebeverine. Actually makes me feel more bloated as I can’t poop for days! 🙈 Mebeverine is an antispasmodic and muscle relaxant that specifically targets “smooth muscle” like intestines but my GP says that it can actually slow down the intestines so much that they just get “lazy”. That’s when everything starts backing up. Speak to your GP If you’ve not already and possible try peppermint oil capsules on prescription.

Hope this helps. 👍🏻

It’s just so bloody frustrating especially when you get the urge to go and then nothing. It feels like it’s getting stuck or taking a long vacation

Constipation is a common problem with mebeverine (although it's not on the leaflet), but it's nothing to worry about if you don't actually feel distended. You give the impression that you have actually had a bowel movement in the last 4 days, but not as easily as usual; this would tie in with what Jasper997 has said. Bear in mind that normal bowel movements are anywhere within the range of 3/day to once every 3 days, so you're not too far outside that. I have alternating IBS and can go without a bowel movement for up to 10 days, then it just starts again of its own accord without the need for medication - not desirable, but in my case there seems to be nothing sinister going on.

If the problem continues, or you start to feel uncomfortable, you could reduce the mebeverine dosage, and then maybe ask your pharmacist for advice if that doesn't work, before going to your GP.

Hi Superzob, thank you for your message, and for putting my mind at ease,it means a great deal and I appreciate you getting back to me. Yes I went this morning and yesterday. Your information has helped me greatly and I very much appreciate it.

Kind regards

Shaun
