it's been assumed that I'm struggling with IBS for around 6 weeks. I've tried buscopan forte with no ease. Last Friday I started Mebeverine hydrochloride 3 times a day, it's not helping! For 6 weeks I have pretty much been stuck in the fetal position with servere cramping pain that I'm comparing to labour contractions. I've gone between diarrhoea and regular stools.
Since it's been such a long time I'm wondering if I should just go to the hospital to be thoroughly looked at, or should I wait longer for the Mebeverine to work? Please help me 😭

The trouble with Buscopan is it stops the gut peristalsis so slows down the movement . This in itself can cause issues. I’d go to A&E you could have a blockage-especially if it happened quickly with no reason good luck
hi . I’m suffering a real bad flare up of my IBS . Began late June. Had stomach ache and low back ache and nausea every day since. Going from constipation to Diarrhoea every few days. Had IBS for over 50 years but never lasted this long or been quite as bad. I’m losing weight too as can’t eat a lot. I’m on mebreverine , buscopan and strong pain killers and sleeping tablets. Like you I get worried but my doctors have done all the tests and everything is normal. I just wonder how long this dreadful pain and discomfort can go on. Apparently IBS can last days, weeks and even months. I hope we both got some relief very soon. Try not to worry as that makes things worse says me the biggest worrier . Sending you hugs x
Mebeverine should have worked by now if it was going to.
I would definitely seek some more support after 6 weeks of IBS type pain.
I have been unwell since mid-July. GP was not much help. Had to attend A&E early August because the pain was so bad. It has lead to lots of tests and seeing a specialist this coming week.
Not sure how things work in Australia but you do need more help.
Both Buscopan and Mebeverine can help the cramps but the underlying cause needs to be found. It may be Diverticular disease or an infection in the bowel that needs antibiotics.
You do need more tests. At the very least more help with your IBS.
I certainly would keep away from buscopan, it made my symptoms worse, I wouldn’t struggle like that either, you need help bless you, go to A& E good luck
I'd ask to be seen as soon as possible - I suffered with a similar pain every 6 weeks or so that would last about 5 days, around my menstrual cycle and had been going on for over 10 years. I assumed as did my GP that it was IBS, and was given Buscopan which did very little for me. I was rushed into hospital in April 2020 for a month with Sepsis and whilst investigating they found a 7 inch long cystic mass on one ovary - I had a hysterectomy as soon as the infection had cleared. The mass was benign thankfully. The surgeon asked me if I'd been experiencing any regular abdominal pain and explained that they'd found that my fallopian tubes were chronically inflamed, probably had been like that for years and were the cause of the pain. I've had no pain at all since my hysterectomy . Ask your doctor to do an abdominal ultrasound to rule this out. Hope you feel better soon.
Thank you! My GP sent me for an ultrasound on my uterus, tubes and ovaries 2 weeks ago as that's what he thought the issue was (I hadn't had a period for almost a year at that point) Dr at A&E thinks its either gallstones or an internal midline hernia. Getting a CT Monday morning to hopefully get an answer and get rid of this pain.
Sorry to hear you have gone through all this. My IBS symptoms are 100 times worse during ‘time of the month’ all be it I have gone through menopause and when I have brought it up with either my GP or consultant before they have not really helped however past two months things have got worse with increased pain where no painkiller helps and neither does Buscopsn. I also have spotting now but only for a few days each past two months. I saw my GP again this Friday and they have referred me for an urgent scan. I’m hoping I don’t have to have hysterectomy myself however hearing that you have no pain since yours it’s good to know as I may have to go down that route at some point as have fibroids and gallstones too!
Hello, sorry you're in so much pain. Usually buscapan cramps work for me, but there has been occassions when nothing touches the pain. After recent investigations where nothing was found, my consultant suggested trying a low dose amitriptyline (10mg). It worked amazing for me. My IBS does seem to be triggered by stress and anxiety.
Thank you, I've been on 100mg of amitriptyline for about 6yrs now (it helps with my lupus, fibromyalgia and crps) no pain killers have been able to touch this pain. Having a CT Monday morning to check for gallstones or an internal midline hernia
Hi, I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I suffer too like this. Firstly, there are some fruits and vegetables that will irritate your IBS (D). I stay away from beans, cabbage, brocolli, cauliflower. I stay from bread no matter what kind. Try going gluten free for a while. It actually helped me a lot. Avocados are good. So are eggs. Bananas are ok as long as they are greenish, not ripe. And honestly, if you are in the middle of a bad session, colpermine is surprisingly effective as are extra strong mints. A lot of the pain is caused by trapped wind which mint is great at disappating. Buscopan is good as a preventative measure, but if you’re in the middle of a painful cramping session, try coloermine and extra strong mints. Also take some paracetamol. It can take some of the edge off. Good luck!
Hi graceful I'm sorry to hear all this. If that was myself I would take myself off to hospital to get checked out. That's what I did a couple of weeks ago. At least you could get a diagnosis,or reassurance.
Getting checked was good for me. Two doctors both considered it was my anxiety. All else was ok.
I'm feeling lots better now . It's quite painful flare ups however your situation of pain is unacceptable. Certainly see doctor at least.
I was taking buscopan (full dose).
If it did work then it was very suttle.
Didn't notice a particular difference to be fair.
Good luck but I would say try not to worry but see Doctor
Thank you. I took myself to A&E to get checked out, they are concerned it's either gallstones or an internal midline hernia. Having a CT first thing Monday morning
Sounds very similar to what my son's going through. The hospital wasn't really helpful. He only got some relief when we removed fructose and fructan containing foods from his diet.
I hope your CT scan goes well. I am on Buscopan which helps me most of the time. If the cramps are really bad I have found that lying on my left side with my knees tucked up helps. Sending hugs and hope you get an answer soon x
Hi There,I don’t know if it was you who put that advice on a few weeks ago,but I will say it was the best advice I’ve had in 10yrs. It works well for me anyway. If it was you, thank you.❤️
Update: I ended up at emergency last month, then have a gastroscopy and colonoscopy, they found polyps and a tumor that was blocking my large and small intestine. I had to have a right hemicolectomy to have the tumor removed. I haven't had the pain since then. The gastroscopy found Barrett's esophagus. I need to have another gastroscopy and colonoscopy next year to make sure they got everything. The tumor was thankfully benign
