Diabetes and ibs

Hey everyone. I am suffering a lot with my ibs -d and I also have diabetes type 2 so I’m trying to manage both together. It’s quite difficult as I’m being told to have sugar free drinks and snacks for my diabetes and for my ibs that is not good for ibs-d. Which makes it worse? Does anyone have the same problem? Any suggestions would be welcomed? Just trying to manage both is very hard? Should I speak to my doctor about it?

Absolutely speak with your doctor about it! We can give you advice but I would hate to tell you the wrong thing. And maybe also have your doctor send you to a Nutrionist?

Firstly anxiety and diet seem to be a major contributor to IBS.

I'm IBS, CKD and type 2 diabetic. I get both C and D, they seem to have turns at frustrating me.

I went on a kidney friendly diet which has also helped my IBS, coincidentally. Looking back I can see the improvements, and there have also been improvements with some other health issues I have.

Generally I feel better now, but not cured.

Foods I don't touch, knowingly;

Manufactured, processed foods, sugar or sugar substitutes, salt or any substitute, no spices and very few herbs. I tend not to eat red meat and only drink water usually sweetened with Stevia, otherwise a good old cup of tea. I tend to use a fair amount of garlic when cooking.

I try to stick to natural fresh foods and use plenty of vegetables, bark green ones are generally better.

I use vegimite/ marmite or sardines, both are high energy and slow release foods so you don't get the sugar hit with them, ideal for diabetics. Yes I know they have salt in them but then I'm not perfect and my test result suggest it is being tolerated by my kidneys with an increase in my GFR.

I haven't found a quick fix but with perseverance an improvement can be had.

I believe the difference for me has been the removal of the highly processed foods from my diet. I'm now able to tolerate a bigger variety of foods, in moderation and occasionally.

Ask your GP to refer you to Dietitian not a Nutritionist and a dietitian that specializes in IBS and Diabetes. You need to be in front of the right health care professional, just because some is a qualified dietitian , they may specialize in another condition so will not be able to help. Have a look on here for dietitians in your area freelancedietitians.org/
