Holiday and IBS

Hi everyone, so I am due to be going on holiday with my boyfriend and his family next month, and whilst I'm excited to spend the week away with my boyfriend, I'm also really nervous about my IBS. My boyfriend is really supportive and understanding, but I'm scared about having a flare up day or being ill away from home. I'm not sure how to relax myself or not worry myself silly about it?

Do you use Imodium ? I always buy supermarket own brands as they are just as good much cheaper

I do understand how you feel

There is a lovely video on YouTube by Michael Sealey on relaxation and IBS

I find mindfulness helpful too

It's fantastic your boyfriend understands and that's such a comfort

I hope that you have a really lovely time and you feel relaxed and comfortable

Take care 💕

I always make sure I have all my comforts with me, whether that's packing peppermint tea, loperamide, peppermint capsules, even been known to pack a hot water bottle when going to Mexico. Make sure you drinks lots of water on the plane, it can be very dehydrating. Stick to the food you know, even if its having to google search how to say things, most are very accommodating, if anything I sometimes find more accommodating than UK restaurants!

Learn basic phrases, without milk, gluten free, it all helps with confidence and should ease your anxiety.

If you have a flare up, relax, read a book by the pool, stay in the shade, you can still enjoy yourself just don't compare what everyone else is doing to what you should be doing. If you can't you can't, you're still on holiday! xx

Hi, I know exactly how you feel & travelling always makes me nervous. I regularly use loperamide, so before travelling abroad I always take them for about a week in the lead up to my holiday. I would say between 2-4 just so they start to build up in your system & work in plenty of time. Then whilst I'm away maybe 1 or 2 a day & try to relax! I always make sure I know where toilets are & avoid any foods that I know may upset me, just stick to something plain & drink plenty. Hope you have a fab time away & manage to relax 🙂

Thank you. I always make sure I have plenty of loperamide with me. I didn't know you could take it when not needed though? Or do you regularly have loose bowel movements? Xx

I've been taking it on & off for about 5 years now with no problems. I was originally advised to take it as much as needed upto 8 a day, but at least one a day so it built up in my system. I did this for about 18 months & then life got busy & I started missing days but still felt absolutely fine with no stomach issues. I then virtually stopped taking it altogether & for about a year had only a couple of problematic days. Slowly things crept back & my issues came back to almost daily, so now I can usually tell if I'm going to have issues during the day so I will take a couple of tablets first thing. I suffer terribly with diarrhoea & the onset & urgency can be just out of the blue. It makes you so anxious before leaving the house at times & always thinking ahead as to where there may be a toilet. Hope you manage to enjoy your time away
