Hi all,

I am wondering how long does a flare up of IBS last for. I cannot seem to find any answers anywhere, or is it a case of how long is a piece of string!!!!!!!! Does anyone know. Thanks.

Give had it daily for 13yrs,and can't see no end to it. You have to find the cause, which I obviously haven't .

At the moment I am looking at food intolerances. Stress has been high but trying to do breathing exercises etc to help it.

IBS-ers who have intermittent flare-ups of IBS symptoms are the more fortunate among us believe it or not! For most, it's an ever-present, 24/7 curse of variable degrees of harshness.

Have you had tests to rule out all other possible causes and, if so, what have you done in the past to relieve symptoms?

Hi, Have had all the tests done by the doc but in the past the flare up has been a lot milder. Usually it seems to disappear after a few weeks but not this time. I have a lot on at the moment too so I think that is the main cause.

Different for every case.... mine is daily, all day, everyday in most cases.

Am keeping a diary of what I eat and drink and doing meditation etc to help relieve symptoms. Yesterday I was dashing to the loo and today my stomach is painful. I feel very tired as well. Am on medicine as well which does help with gas and pain but feel a bit fed up today.

Mostly chicken, fish, bread, eggs,, rice, pasta and vegetables. Have cut down on tea, coffee, tomato and coke. It does seem very hit and miss. When I have something like comfort food oddly my stomach feels more settled. It is very weird.

Hello, unfortunately no one can answer this question with any accuracy. IBS symptoms are unique to each individual. Flares in general can last days or months or years. They do not know with certainty what causes IBS, therefore there is no magic pill that works for everyone either. Diet, stress, anxiety, gut flora imbalance, other inflammatory conditions among others have been cited as possible causes for IBS but doctors really don't know for sure. Some doctors don't take IBS seriously, they have no idea what kinda hell people go through with IBS. If you haven't already done so, a good place to start trying to "fix" or "manage" your condition is diet. For me caffeine really aggravates my condition....and I am a coffee lover. I was in a constant flare lasting years ( IBSD)

I completely changed my diet, followed Fodmap religiously in addition cut out all caffeine and started yoga, and as per my Gasterontologist took one Aligne Probiotic daily. She told me it has to be Aligne because that has certain types of bacterium not found in other probiotics. it took about a year to actually have results that were noticeable. The Fodmap diet is hard....at least for me, but it helped me to learn what food trigger a flare for me. #1 deep fried foods

# coffee.....I have since learned it is actually the aciddity not the actual caffeine, took a long time to figure this ou!

#3 diary ( I'm lactose intolerant)

#4 processed foods

#5 broccoli

Everyone will have different triggers. Once you learn yours you can avoid the bad foods and hopefully have some relief from flares. I will say it is a lot of work to completely change your diet but if I had not done so, I would still be in a constant flare. I ask do yoga to reduce stress and keep flexible as I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis.

(Apologize for typos, this site won't let me make corrections from my phone)

This is the most genuine description to our miserable condition we IBS's ..Unfortunately if I say it to even close friends or family members they think I overreact or exaggerate ..no one believes how cruel and unpredictable is IBS until you get it ..even my own doctor says your blood tests are fine..you don't have diarrhea !!! should I invite him to my bathroom trips to prove it 😥😳😩😩

As the old quote says (( You Don't get it until you GET it ))

Thank you, I will start also cutting out some veg to see what works and what does not. Tomato definitely seems to upset me, as does too much caffeine.

Thank you, again very helpful. I do make my own bread and do try and have wild rice when I can. I also tend to make all my own meals but have the odd jar of sauce when in a hurry. I think the odd times when I have a sauce that has come from a jar I am bad almost within 2 hours of eating. Am currently eliminating things as I go along and keeping a food diary. Hopefully in time I will find out the cause if food is part of my problem.

Have you consider that fermentation is going on in your gut? Look up Dysbiosis and see if it " fits"
