Everyone is different from what I've read on here. Some can have low levels and receive an IBD diagnosis some can have high levels for various reasons I suppose. I know it's a worrying time but I'm sure if high they'll run the normal tests to check you out xxx

Hi poppi2015 just got my test results back they came out as 134 so have gone up 70 since last August, its hard to tell what it could be its so worring sorry to hear your daughters in pain, Its a ridicouless long wait to see the gastro. Have you ever thought about seeing a dietician in the meantime?

Hello,

Mine was 568 in November 2018 and 955 in December 2019, I’m just waiting for the results of a repeat test. Gastro consultant thinks I’ve had 2 infections a year apart that’s caused the raised levels rather than a diagnosis of IBD.

Did you have mucus or anything

Yes, a lot of mucus, particularly the first time and diarrhoea 6-14 times a day for 4-8 weeks. Along with stomach pains and cramps.

My daughter has been like this now for 3-4 months now.

I'm too old. It is not offered to over 60's in my area. :-( . The theory being that we will have inflammation anyway...

I should state upfront that I've never been diagnosed with IBS (though I had symptoms several years ago).

Anyhow my calprotectin went from 30 to 12 to 2 in 3 stool/gut tests in the past ~3 years. I'm unsure how significant the figures are but, if they are, I believe it's a reflection of my stringent, paleo diet.

Under 50 is classed as normal xxx

Yes I realise (all 3 of) my results are normal as the N ranges supplied with the results are as high as 175. The point I was trying to make is that my paleo diet may be the reason why it still reduced with time in case that is helpful for those above normal.

I am investigating still to rule out IBD, but the temporary diagnosis is IBS. Had calprotectin 288 in 2016 and never followed it up with a colonoscopy however in October 2019 when I started being very symptomatic is was 52 then 95. I am on no medication. I know IBS is bad but it’s still better than IBD!

My daughter is 19 and has never had any problems, until she started taking the birth control pill after having her little one. For last 2 months or more, she has had bouts of loose stools bouts of small pieces of stools, also lots of tummy pain bloating and cramps. Her calprotectin level was 375 last week. Just wish we knew what or why this has only started since the birth control pill

may be a side effect from the pill ..some one wrote in this forum long time ago about how her Hormone Replacement Therapy was the culprit to her IBS troubles ..especially " the one hormone pill " is she still taking them ?

Poppi2015 profile image
Poppi2015 in reply toEternity78

Yes she’s taking them. Cezarette it’s called birth control pill

Eternity78 profile image

This is a " progesterone only pill " which means it has only one hormone ..also used as a Hormonal Replacement Therapy for the menopausal women whish is now not recommended by many Gn / OB doctors due to its many adverse reactions .. I would suggest that she either stop them and try another contraceptive method or have a talk with a Gynecologist to find another substitute with less side effects ..is she hospitalised to receive Rehydration fluids ??

Hi Poppi. The birth control pills may change gut bacteria, might well be that she needs to change the pill brand or find another contraceptive solution. I would speak to the doctor and run some tests including colonoscopy.

Hi Poppi.

I know you mentioned your daughter has not yet seen a gastroenterologist but if she is on the waiting list for an appointment you could ring the secretary of the consultant she has been referred to and inform them of her recent calprotectin level, as it was a week ago they may not be aware of it. If you prefer you could ask the gp who referred her to try and get the appointment expedited based on the latest calprotectin result plus her symptoms.

Has the gp tried any medication to help whilst she is waiting to be seen? Has your daughter found anything in her diet to be a trigger? For me I have to be very careful with dairy and wheat, I've also found the fodmap diet very helpful.

I hope she feels better and can be seen soon to put both your minds at ease.

Take care x

Mine was 1800 as of last week, but I have no symptoms, nothing, apart from fresh blood on the toilet paper and sometimes on stool and mucus on the stool.. I have piles, that GP has confirmed, and I have read they can cause fresh blood and mucus. I have had a changed bowel habit ever since i started drinking coffee a couple of years ago (I started going once or twice a day, with softer but normally shaped stool usually. I stopped drinking coffee now but in these couple of years I used to drink like 3 cups a day sometimes). No idea what's wrong, GP isn't instilling ant confidence.... He just said "IBD, colonoscopy, see you".

Not what you're looking for?
