Low Fodmap Diet

Hi All

Just a quick post. I started the above diet on Monday this week and wasn't very good right up until yesterday. I woke up this morning and yay, I feel so much better.

I'm not saying this diet is easy, it's not, but if it makes me feel like this then it's worth it. It's not easy for me as I'm a Vegan so the food choices are even more limited.

For those of you that haven't tried it, I know it works for 75% of people, then I'd highly recommend it, there are lots of recipes online and some very good Low Fodmap cook books.

I’m so glad it’s working for you! I also started doing the fodmap diet on Monday with help from the Monash app. Unfortunately i haven’t had as good results, still have loose frequent stool and fear I may be worse than I was before starting the diet! Are you doing it with help from a dietitian? 😊

in reply toShofor

I'm sorry it's not working for you, it may just be taking you longer to readjust, I wasn't great yesterday and was still you g to the toilet often. It wasn't until when I woke up today that I felt much better. Yes I am under a Dietician via the NHS.

Are you Inn the UK? If you are then my Dietician said to purchase the UK version of the Fodmap diet which is through Kings College London.

The foods from the Monash University diet is very different from the UK. Also, my Dietician said a lot of the information from the internet is out of date.

I hope this helps and I hope you're better very soon.

Take care😊

I recently was diagnosed with ibs. I'd started doing a gut healing protocol and after 9 days it's made absolutely no difference. I'm still incredibly bloated to the point where I look 9 months pregnant. It's so embarrassing my clothes can't even disguise the size of my belly it's so massive! I went to the docs on wed and she suggested some meds and the fodmap diet. I'm finding it very overwhelming, I too am vegan and have literally no idea where to start! I'm exhausted from lack of sleep due to an unsettled baby so trying to work out an eating plan seems hard to get my head around. Any tips you could share ? How do you find it being vegan?

Hi Nzmama_5

I'm so sorry you are struggling. I'm replying on my phone at the moment and would rather use my PC where I can share some links etc. I'll reply further tomorrow.

I’ve been in it for about two years now. The first 8 weeks really helped sort out what was a trigger and what was not. The very restricted food type intake with individual introduction is like weaning a baby. It’s not intuitive is it? I sometimes ate something I shouldn’t have done by mistake. I have also discovered that there are some things on the list I can eat. I do have flare ups but usually know what I did or discover something isn’t going to work for me. I eat much smaller meals and loads of vegetables. I’ve lost two stone and still going. I used to eat a fairly vegetarian diet but have found that I enjoy meat again for the first time in over twenty years, my body must need it. I hope you’re improvements last for you too 😀

Hi Merlin, thank you for your reply, it's really helpful. I'm certainly finding it's helping as I feel so much better. I had a low Fodmap homemade meal last night and added some vegetables with it and it was actually too much, I don't seem to be able to eat as much which is actually a good thing. My Dietician did say that maybe eating little and more often would help and I think this may be best for me although I'm not so keen on eating first thing in the morning now. It really is like weaning a baby and I'm not going to say it's easy as it's not but I am going to say it's definitely worth it to feel this much better. I start the re-introduction after I see the Dietician again on 25 February. I do agree as when you restrict a diet so much you can more of less see what your triggers are. I had worked out beforehand that I couldn't tolerate caffeine, raw carrots, raw onions, gluten (the fructans as I have no problems eating my homemade Spelt Sourdough bread) and too much fruit.

I'm not sure whether I'd go back to eating meat as I cannot even stand the smell of it. I bought pasties today for my husband and couldn't stand the smell. I'm a Vegan and planning to stay that was as before I had the food poisoning back in November 2018 my health was constantly improving with a Vegan diet, it's the infection that upset everything.

Thank you and I hope your health stays on track. Well done to you for sticking to this. :)

Has changed my life, stick with it, and it does get easy. Make your own snacks, banana loaf, tray bakes etc. Brilliant.

And wow i really know when I've had wheat or lactose etc by mistake

in reply toMunchkinfeet

Thank you so much Munchkinfeet for your encouragement. I do feel so much better and there's no way I'm going back to the way I was that's for sure. I make everything myself; I made yummy no bake peanut butter oat snack bars yesterday, I'm having one tonight. :)

It's not nice eating something by mistake, particularly if it's something ready made, the reaction is horrible.

Enjoy good health:)

Aw you're so welcome. Yes mmm peanut butter, I need a new recipe using that. I make flapjack, brownie and banana loaf every week. I cook practically everything from scratch, except bread and pizza base, which I get in Morrisons.

I'm defo wheat and lactose sensitive, the obvious ones too, onions kill me, garlic too.

Aunty Bessies parsnips had me ill for a week last week. Hidden wheat flour. It was on the ingredient list but i didnt read it, thought it was just parsnip 🤣

If you get the fodmap headache just work through it, it will pass. For the fodmap constipation I use aloe vera tablets. Gentle, works a treat.

Yes stay healthy, omg I've been so ill this week with gabapentin side effects. Its never ending😬

in reply toMunchkinfeet

I've got the low fodmap and vegan cookbook by Jo Stepaniak and made some no bake Peanut Butter Granola Bars, they are delicious. I make my own Peanut butter and bread I make Spelt Sourdough, it's a Doves Farm recipe and is really good.

I've made all my own stuff and will continue to do so as I then know what's in it. I've found quite a lot of recipes online.

Oh no, so sorry you had a bad reaction that's horrible.

Thank you for letting me know re headache and the Alie Vera.

I've never heard of Gabapentin.

Hope you are better now.

Alicia 😀
