Upper GI Results

If I were to have an upper GI barium swallow test, would taking a PPI affect the results? If I do have reflux would the test show that I don’t since I am taking medication for it?

If the radiologist knew you were taking some medication and you had not been advised to stop, they would take it into account when analysing your results.

I wasn’t advised to stop my medication and I don’t believe he knew I was taking it

Would fasting affect the results?

I was told to fast but would reflux occur on an empty stomach?

Yes reflux could occur on an empty stomach. I would contact the radiologist or GI consultant and let them know about the medication, as it could affect the results (If it didn't, there would be no point in taking the medicine).

It shouldn't be a problem, but I would suggest you contact your doctor beforehand with those concerns, he or she could explain it better. Also, you can still have reflux while fasting, I did when I had my last upper GI.

Also, they are looking for more than just reflux with that test, so PPI's (which I have taken for years) shouldn't affect it.
