Just to let everyone know I have now weaned myself off Omeprazole after 7 years and I am now eating normally without any problems apart from a bit of heartburn which is normal after coming off these awful tablets takes about 8weeks to settle down I’ve been off them 5 weeks . The reason is they were doing me more harm than good I couldn’t eat anything with fat in it and I was in pain all the time with really bad bloating and wind ? So I decided to get off them myself and I am now eating everything with no side effects at all ? I can only think the diagnosis was wrong to start with

Off the pills
Oh, I only learnt about omeprozel back in 2010. I used it short time in hospital. 2016 got a bout of CAP. Some ct scans showed i had a hiatus hernia. Further a colonoscopy showed a diverticulitis. Back home GP put me back on omeprozale. But by that time i had already done study of PPl.'S. I Decided to limit them only when i needed them, like before having a late meal. Or anything spicy. Taking them every day i thought was unnecessary
I have to dispute your term "Awful pills", because, without them, it is unlikely that I would be here. I can understand that they didn't work for you, and therefore, you wouldn't be their greatest fan, but please bear in mind there are a lot of people on this site, who, on seeing your post, may be inclined to stop taking them and putting themselves at great risk of doing harm to their bodies.
Years ago a consultant wanted to put me on 40 mg of Nexium for life, for oesophageal spasm. I didn't accept it and don't take it unless I have heartburn or ogl spasm. Ignoring heartburn in the long term is bad and puts you at risk of worse conditions, but you are right in that having useful amounts of stomach acid improves your digestion and bacterial overgrowth, for which reason I dont take ppi's unless I have heartburn. It can be caused by a hiatus hernia which is common and diagnosed by a scope.
I used to take Lansoprazole but I had to take myself off them because they make me breathless and very wheezy I'm also COPD but kept going back to the doctor's and nobody didn't know really what the problem was and it was when I read on here that people can be be in tolerant to them I took myself off them so the nurse I seen put me on Omeprazole 10mg. I have to have something like that because I have trouble swallowing sometimes and I feel like I've got something in my throat and coughing but reading about some of these things and now I'm scared to take these new tablets.in case it happens again!.
