FODMAP Guide

Some of you will know that I have recommenced the Monash University and Kings College Low FODMAP protocols which I used during the eradication of my SIBO and IBS. Links below.

I know that these resources do not necessarily make light reading and the use of smart phone app's is not everyone's cuppa tea.

I have also recommended Schar's excellent booklet on a Low FODMAP diet for IBS sufferers but it appears that this booklet is only available through healthcare professionals. Maybe I will be able to get copies when I have completed my [basic] nutrition course next year! 😊

Speaking with my dietician today about reliable resources on the subject of low FODMAP diets she has recommended a book by Dr Megan Rossi. They both trained together at Kings College and the author has gone on to become a research fellow at the College.

I have not read it yet but have just ordered a copy from Amazon amazon.co.uk/Gut-Health-Doc... It is available in paperback and Kindle formats.

I cannot say how good a read it is yet, nor how helpful it might be but I trust my recommender implicitly!

Just to be sure...neither of us has any affiliation with Amazon or the author 💸

Let me know if you get a copy and how good a read it is...

Hi David

What an excellent post and a good recommendation.

I'm a great believer in 'you are what you eat' particularly now I've had a Gut Biome test done and have received the results. I have recently purchased 2 books off Amazon and they are 10% Human and Psychobiotic Revolution both books relate to our gut health and the second book relates to our brains and our gut.

I totally agree with you on the Low Fodmap diets and they have been proven to work and I know they have worked with you. Monash University being the originators of the diet and I'm so pleased that slowly but surely doctors in this country are now realising that there is truth in our conditions can relate to our diets - about time I would say!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your book and please let us know what you think of it.

Hi Hidden

Good suggests from you too...I would take your adage one step further - 'you are what you absorb' 😊

Arr..the gut and the brain!

It is still a widely heard belief in medicine that the Gut/Brain barrier is impenetrable!! This 'stupidism' dates back to 17th century philosophy promulgated by the likes of René Descartes.

This created "Dualism", the practise of the belief that the brain and the body should be treated independently in medicine...BS!! This is still taught today.

The inflamed mind is a good book if you are interested amazon.co.uk/Inflamed-Mind-...

It is interesting to read how people with chronic conditions are not depressed because they just feel bad but because the physical inflammation, inflames the brain too.

Some anti inflammatories not only benefit those with the likes of rheumatoid arthritis but reduce depression too because the brain inflammation reduces at the same time.

Some reading this might think its a bit off-piste, or so what...but consider this, when you feel so down with your IBS, that inflammation that is effecting you gut, might well be effecting your brain too!

I will report back once I read my latest recommendation! 🤓

Thank you and I love your addition re absorbing, so very true ;)

Totally agree but it's getting better all the time and there are no some doctors out there that recognise it but unfortunately not many as yet.

I'm not surprised that the brain and body are treated independent of each other and it's still being taught today, there are still quite a few dinosaurs out there!

Thank you for the book recommendation on the Inflamed Mind.

Yes agree that it's very interesting as if you are not feeling well physically it affects your brain, well it certainly does mine and did over the months following the food poisoning episode in November last year. Your physical condition definitely affects your mental condition.

Yes I can understand that. I did subscribe to some emails from a Clint Paddison as it mentioned Rheumatoid Arthritis. He has a programme on how to heal RA, link below:

paddisonprogram.acemlna.com...

Now I've not had chance to have a look at this yet but will do but the reason I am so interested is because I have a friend who has a daughter with JIA (Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis) and she is in immense pain every day and has just been put under for Cortisone injections and she will have to have an operation on her ankle, she's just coming up to 16 and was diagnosed 4 years ago. They say if children have it in 4 or more joints when they are children they are likely to have it for life. Also, my granddaughter also has JIA but she has the Uveitis so the inflammation is mainly in her eyes although it started in her knee and thumb, her thumb is still swollen but doesn't hurt her and the Consultant said that it's clear at the moment of any inflammation. my granddaughter is only 3 so this is the reason why I am so interested in the programme along with my friend's daughter. The good thing though is my granddaughter is now in medicated remission so if she stays like that for 2 years she can come off the drugs and if still clear 6 months later can have the live vaccines i.e. MMR which at present she can't have because of the Chemo drugs she's on.

It's definitely not off-piste, it's totally true and makes a lot of sense. How many people out there say when they are poorly they feel really happy - enough said.

Looking forward to learning about your new book. :)

Very interesting...I'll have a look at Paddison.

I hope you friend's daughter finds some relief one day!

in reply to

I really hope she does, she's in so much pain, a lot when you're just about to turn 16.

Hi

Yes I too ordered a copy after hearing the author on the radio a couple of weeks back.

I have not finished it but so far it is a hugely informative read.. eminently sensible and a great starting point for trying to exclude certain foods from your diet.. 👍
