IBS-C - flare trigger...previous day super hungry

Hello all

I'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed that having a super hungry day is a flare trigger.

I've noticed that when I have a really hungry day because my digestion is working really well, the very next day - i inevitably have a flare where i have incomplete BM (yep, TMI) and my digestion feels stuck. Like it is on strike - gone to sleep and nothing is moving. Then I'm not hungry at all and struggle to eat.

Few questions here:

1) Does anyone else experience that?

2) Do you know why and how have you dealt with it?

3) What (or do you) eat on your flare days when you have no appetite and now gut activity?

I'd be grateful to hear from anyone else who can relate.

Wishing you all a good day.

I can only answer number 3 for you. I eat clear soups, drink plenty of water, black tea (I don't like coffee),and (if I feel really hungry) I will eat a slice of two of toast. However, if I still feel the same after 3 days, and, if I haven't passed wind, I will be at A&E, or the emergency clinic, arranged by my IBD/IBS nurse.

Thanks FReedman, i think i need to be more compassionate and garteful as i do still usually end up eating a proper meal..partly because i feel ripped off not eating (much) all day, partly because i get concerned my digestion start working when i relax during sleep and then wake up through the night hungry. But, also because i'm concerned if i don't eat solid food my digestive tract will not be stimulated and the stuckness will take longer to pass. Clearly, i have given this a lot of thought. Haha.

Hi , yes those symptoms sound familiar. Its like you are super hungry and eat more than normal, then your bowel gets congested and you cant get rid of it! I then have to try and take something to help with the constipation, milk magnesia or movicol. Then when not hungry eat really light, chicken soup (clear), crackers and plain toast and little cold meat. Or fish.

Right, i use magnesium citrate or movicol...both if feels really stuck...that works but i don't like taking these things (who does!)

No i dont like taking them. Sometimes they work, other times i feel they make it worse. Or cause pain

Yeah that's not what you need!

I have found recently that chocolate trifle works well for me when bunged up! Nicer than taking laxatives. 😄

I follow the fod map diet and sometimes I do get hungry and want to keep eating. I have a feeling though that it is acid or something like that, that is making me feel hungry. I think I found an explanation for it somewhere? I try not to overeat as I will have problems the next day. Just try to eat sensibly and keep calm. I think a lot of my problems are related to getting anxious about things. If I don't feel hungry one day I might have boiled rice. When feeling a little better I might introduce heavier stuff like rice, chicken, spinach and carrot stir fried with a bit of parmesan cheese over it for taste or black bean sauce. Try not to over think it and try to relax. I

fodder4me I so relate to the anxiety. I feel anxious when I'm super hungry because I know it's a trigger...it's a vicious cycle...but I'm learning to focus on managing the anxiety as this will go a long way to improving my digestion (not to mention my quality of life).

Thanks for such an understanding reply!!

Yes I too get this vicious cycle. I have had a few minor blockages too. I see my fodmap dietician for the first time on 15th oct. I am certain I have intolerances as well as functional issues. I think severe stress at work for several years has a lot to answer for

Wow, I can relate to all you said there Munchinfeet. I'd love to hear how you go with your fodmap dietician. I'm toying with the idea of finding a new dietician myself. I think I need someone that understands the stress/emotional issues that cause and the new stress that develops as a result of the symptoms. I'm using NERVA a 6 week hypnotherapy app which has been developed by a PHD trained IBS expert. I'm on week 2. I'm not sure if it's helping at the mo but it certainly isn't hurting.
