Diverticulitis- when to take antibiotics or not...?

Hi there I would be v grateful and interested to hear people’s experiences/thoughts about how long you can have diverticulitis flare up without taking anti-b? Eg If your temp starts going down and pain etc subsiding then I guess you are fine not to take anti-b as over the worst?

But why would you?

Surely, once you know it is not right, you would contact your medics and ask them for assistance. If you are trying to be a martyr or there is a particular reason you are waiting without medication, then, fine, carry on. But I would have thought the majority of people would want both, the pain and symptoms, gone as soon as possible.

Thanks for your reply. Not keen to take anti-b if I can get through without as they damage your healthy bacteria in your stomach, that’s all.

Hey Budgie!! I replied to your other post. I ended up going into the doc. I have diverticulitis 🙄 My temp is gone and the pain isn’t bad, but I still have to take the antibiotics for 10 days.

Hi there :-) so did I - (end up going to GP, yesterday) as temp soared again and I started feeling just ill all over. Mine treat with 3 x per day for 5 days however 🤔 what are you eating? Are you on a liquid diet? Do you have any.... errr.... bowel movements? ☺️

Hi. Hope you are doing ok. I also had a diverticulitis attack and was put on antibiotics - never again! Had antibiotic related constant diaohrea for 2 weeks after. Was just going to send in a sample for c diff when it settled down but am still having problems 2 months later. Don’t know why this happened- think I just couldn’t tolerate 2 antibiotics at the same time. The devil and the deep blue sea comes to mind! Wishing you well.

Ugh, I don’t want to hear that. My tummy already feels upset and I just started my course of antibiotics. This is going to be a long 10 days. 🤦🏼‍♀️ They don’t want to do a sample now? Even though you have been suffering so long? I am sorry that happened! That sounds so miserable!!

I have been having plain crackers, broth, and once a day a chicken noodle soup. After taking one dose of each of my antibiotics I’ve already had a couple bm’s...due to the meds I believe, although honestly it could be meds/nerves combo. I’ve had myself quite worked up over this entire deal.

I know how you feel! Perhaps I shouldn’t have told you about my experience- please try not to worry it always makes our problems worse! Got a doctors appointment for Monday so hope to get some answers but quite prepared for them to say it’s just diverticulitis so get on with it!

I will be thinking of you. I sincerely hope that they really listen to you and come up with some sort of treatment plan for you.

Is your chicken noodle soup and broth see through? X

The broth is yes. They never told me that I needed to be on a liquid diet though. My doctor told me just to eat bland foods.

Hiya do you mind me asking which brand your broth is? Or did you make it? Does see through just mean see-through if you dilute more? Doc today told me for example that Ribena is see through.

Pacific brand broth here in the US is see through. I would just dilute any broth that you may have. I of course would ask your doc first if that is ok.

Thank you. Unfortunately we don't have that brand here (England). Tonight I just had a chicken stock cube with hot water. Oh boy i cannot wait to be better. :-(. !

Nb just re-reading your earlier messages. How are you doing today? Know what you mean about getting worked up about it. When it drags on it's just horrible, can't plan anything, and you feel so tired cos you're not getting any nutrients. For the first time in my life I'm also on laxatives now too :-( The trouble is my colons are so floppy, with redundant loops on both colons, and because ive not been eating they've retired apparently! So they need to get them moving. I was sent to the emergency dept at hospital today, and have to go back Friday if no improvement in pain.

Hi Budgie! I am ok today. My stomach no longer hurts but I have diarrhea from the meds now. I really hope that things get moving for you so that you get some relief, and don’t have to go back to the a&e. How are you feeling today?

Hi there, so glad you are feeling a bit better. My stomach pains have settled - except when I open bowels. 😱.i actually had some BMs this morning ☺️I’m just v drained as not really eaten for a week and being on jelly and clear soup is not going to build me up! Trouble is lots of the soups have celery in and the other day on my good day I asked the restaurant what was in the veg dish I ate, which was a few hours before this kicked in. They mentioned celery and chilli. I have had chilli happily before. So I’m wondering if it was the celery - I never knew before what an allergen it is but it’s listed in bold on all the ingredients. So I’m just having the jelly and the only stock cube I can find without celery. Question now is what do we eat after this is done with?!! . I will prob see consultant I saw before and ask how to build seed back up again without risking inflammation. Sorry about your upset stomach - I don’t have that from the meds which is surprising and guess shows just how much my bowels had shut down. Virtual hug to you 🤗

I am glad that things are finally moving through for you! You know, I wonder if it wasn’t the chilli spice. I had nachos the night mine flared. My brother just recently went through all of this and his trigger meal was also a Mexican dish. Please try to get as much broth in yourself as you can. I want you to start feeling better. My tummy is kind of sore off and on. I hope that’s “normal”.

Ah bless you, I hope you feel much better soon too. I think the sore tummy on and off is normal yes. I’m feeling lots better this evening. Feasting on TV in bed. I’m just eating chicken stock cube as all I can find that seems safe :-)

As long as you’re eating something. Thank you for reassuring me about the sore tummy. I have been thinking about it more than I probably should. 😄 Here’s to the both of us feeling even better!
