I have been taking Cholestyramine sachets for IBS.....for years...there is a distribution problem at the chemist, so haven't taken one for 5 days, diarrhoea back with a vengeance. Chemist told me there is a substitute in a tablet form. Anyone one had a similar problem?

Hi Fudgerelle
I’m afraid the cholestyramine is a manufacturing problem and supplies will probably not be available this year. Cholestyramine light is available in limited quantities, but this is hit and miss I’m afraid .
Onto your question, yes there is a tablet Cholestagel, this has also been out of stock for a while but should be in wholesalers around this time. It’s much easier to take, I take 6 tablets a day and you don’t have to clean your teeth after taking as you do with the cholestyramine sachets. The only downside is the cost, well over £100 per prescription so doctors don’t want to prescribe. I can’t understand why it seems all the medicines that stop the diarrhoea associated with BAM are in such short supply. I have only been treated for the last 6 weeks but it’s been a life changer for me.
Good luck
