Ibs treatment antibiotics and good bacteria????

Hi i am currently looking for anybody who has used the antibiotic and good bacteria treatment for ibs.

I got ibs about 6 months after i was given very strong antibiotics to cure food poisoning when i was 16 (campylobacter).

About 12 months later my cousin got the same food poisoning and was given the same antibiotics and she also ended up with ibs.

Both of us have the same type of ibs - going the toilet 5 to 8 times a day with very loose stool and cramping stomach's with spasms.

Fortunately for my cousin, my uncle has a very good job and as a result he could afford to contact a ibs specialist in america. She was given a type of antibiotic that kills all bacteria in your intestines for 3 months and at the same time she started a 12 month course of a strong good bacteria in tablet form. Whilst taking this medication she had to eat a health diet that wasnt too high in fat or sugars.

She has been ibs FREE for nearly 10 years now!!!

I want to no if anybody else has tried or heard of this treatment in the uk or through the NHS as like many i want my life back. IBS FREE is my goal, like my cousin.

Unfortunately we are not on speaking terms so im currently unable to find out what the antibiotics and good bacteria are called. Im praying that someone has tried this or has knowledge of the treatment as mine and my cousins ibs started the same way, so im praying this might work for me.

If anybody can help, please respond. Even if its a tiny bit of info regarding this treatment it could help.

I no this sounds to good to be true but i promise you it is real. Please help if you can.

Morning, the flora in your gut is probably damaged from using the antibiotics that you took for your illness, when i had a course of tablets for HPyLori i was told to take a course of pro-biotics, however these needed to be very strong.

I was told to find some with more than 50 billion CFU's so i researched and found a website called the GUT DOCTOR - the product i use is below. These are from America and prove very useful when i have any flare ups.

I probably should take them evry day and finish the 90 day course but i havent so far!!

Please look through the website they haev plenty of treatments for all GUT issues, i hope this helps - all the best.

Hi,

I have some anecdotal experience of antibiotics and probiotics working to beat IBS - l have (had?) IBSd and last year was given Aciclovir for a bout of shingles.

I have taken Acidophilus for years, and about a week after the course of Aciclovir finished I realised that my IBS symptoms had gone!

They did gradually return, but much milder.

In November 2018, I was on a diving trip to the Red Sea and got the usual Egyptian tummy(!) When I returned to the UK, the loose motions gradually subsided and I tried taking Olive Leaf Extract (a ‘natural’ antibiotic) to kill the last bad bacteria in my gut.

Since that time I have continued to take 1 capsule of Holland & Barrett Acidophilus (3 billion) daily and my IBS symptoms have not returned.

I think it’s important to take the Acidophilus first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

Hope that helps.

I don't know about this treatment but I think it's important to know the condition of the gut flora. In the UK the comprehensive stool test to check this is not available on the NHS so I have recently contacted a private clinic, had a Skype consultation and just completed the stool test and blood tests so waiting for results now. Without this test I just do not know what state my gut is in. I hope you get some help soon.

Dear Aunty Jean,

Are you able to do all the consultations and tests by skype, and "Mail order" if I can out it like that, or is it best to visit Kate in Eastbourne ? (I'm not local)

Many thanks,

Ernest

Yes I had consultation on Skype. Kit for stool test was posted to me. I posted specimens back. Kate wrote to my doctor and asked for specific blood tests which have been done. I will collect results and email to Kate. Once all results are in we will have another Skype chat. I'm not near Eastbourne either.

So far I have paid £330 for consultation, test and doctor's letter. She thinks I will just need one more shorter consultation to discuss results and treatment. Much cheaper than the private hospital near me. All prices are on the website.

Thank you very much for your messages. It good to see that other people having some success with this treatment and at the same time it is disgusting to see the nhs do not provide these basic gut flora tests given the success in america in europe with this type of treatment. Its the same old treat the symptoms but not the cause of the issue to fill there pockets :(

I av been doing alot of research in the past few days and even found out that my ibs is called Post Infectious IBS-D

Although i av not tried this treatment yet i have found on several studies and research papers that the best results have been from a probiotic called Bifidobacterium Infantis.

Iv not checked if this is available in the uk yet. But im glad to see other probiotics seem to work in high enough doses.

For those who are trying this the research i have read is that if your ibs keeps coming and going, its because the antibiotic course was not long enough. Seing that my cousins course was 3 months and she is still ibs free, it seems to make sense.

I am going to keep gathering information on this and will share anything i find including types of probiotics and antibiotics that have potential to work. Please keep leaving any information regarding this on here.

Its sounds daft and maybe this is a well known treatment abroad, but in the uk moneys wins meaning even if this did work they would still rather leave us in pain to fill there pockets. So any info we share on this could lead to at least some people being ibs free or at least having a better quality of life.

Thank you again and il keep updating this thread with any new information i find :)

I was told (by NHS) that acidophilus pills need to be 20 -> 30 billion bacteria.

Think I had to take them for at least 4 weeks before I noticed an effect.

Of course that's not scientific because I'm only one patient and I can't repeat that test.

I've just carried on taking them (not cheap to do that though) for about 3 months now.

I do note the comment above about first thing on an empty stomach (so I'll go and read the label to check that)

Many thanks,

Ernest

I got ibs after I was on cellulitis in both my legs I was on iv antibiotics called forgot what it was called basically killed my stomach lining

Hi - if you can find the same medication your cousin used - by looking up drugs.com an American website - you can find the drugs.com uk page. If you screen the ingredients of the US product you might find a generic equivalent through drugs.com. There is a Uk linked website where you can buy the medication linked to the US. All you need is the us link by e mail to ask about the same drug.

You can ask for your back notes from the NHS hospital to see what drug you had IV.

If you have any history of taking antibiotics then write a list of the ones you have been given. Food poisoning is vile - a friend visiting the Uk, from US swore by Cipro. The recommendations for a high dose to stop the symptoms in hours will be found on drugs.com. This is a synthetic drug used for severe problems and I use it though I have an allergy to penicillin. There is a 1 in 8 chance that your genes may not respond in the same way to drugs as your cousin. I have found clarithromycin helpful for a bowel infection which started with a cold, and turned into a bacterial infection. This antibiotic is used for h pylori bacteria in the stomach, and can help your bowel. Low sugar helps to cut down the flora in the gut that feeds on sugar such as sibo and candida. Yeast should be avoided if you have had any history of a fungal infection.

Thank you for the information, there is alot of things in your post iv not thought of or even tried to do. I wasnt aware you could check the uk/ usa drugs register to find a uk drug similar to those of the usa. Brilliant info can't thank you enough. I am looking into the uk ibs research team to see if this is something they are or looking to trial, as it would save alot of time and waiting if i where going through them instead of the nhs.
