IBS, seems to have gone after antibiotics for another condition.

Hello, I just thought it might be helpful to share my story here. If it even helps one person! I was diagnosed with IBS a couple of years ago after a couple of years of huge suffering. It was steadily getting worse recently to the point that I was literally crying, it felt like labour pains! I tried everything and was basically hooked up to a tens machine. Then I started getting some other unrelated issues and went to the doctor. She diagnosed me with thrush and Bacterial vaginosis at the same time. Blurgh. Anyway she prescribed me Metronidazole antibiotics for the BV. One dose of 5 tablets. Imagine my joy to discover a few days later how my IBS symptoms have dissapeared. I had a couple of days of passing the most evil stools (sorry!) and lost around 2kgs But the bloating, pain etc is gone. Im not sure what it was, but on looking it up it seems that antibiotic is to kill BV but also some stomach parasites too. Im wondering if that is what was causing my IBS symptoms too. Thank you for reading, I hope this may be helpful to someone. And I hope its not temporary, but at least I have some leads!

Hi Moonchild23. I’m glad this has cleared your problem for you! Metronidazole was one of the tablets prescribed to me by my gastroenterologist when I had SIBO which has now gone, I’m working on healing my gut now 😃.

Good luck! Im very excited at the possibility of the pain being gone, but like you say, I still have other symptoms that my gut is not healthy, so thats the next step. Sending healing vibes.

I was given this antibiotic for a leg infection. It made me feel very ill.It really affected my stomach.

Pain and nausea.

I must admit I did notice my stomach problems had improved afterwards though.

This was about six months ago.

I still suffer with tummy problems but not so much.

I am plucking up the courage to try aflorex. I am nervous as I have tried others in the past and they seemed to make me worse..

Its really hit or miss, I also suffer from bad tinnitus, which started after a course of antibiotics for an ear infection. This was just random luck I guess, I feel rubbish right now because I am now on my 5th course of antibiotics for a different infection (which finally seem to be working) Sickness and nausea but still no sign of the IBS which is making me feel extremely happy, just hope it doesnt return. Good luck with your IBS too, it really is horrible and life changing stuff.

Many years ago I worked as a secretary to a gastroenterologist, and he used to routinely prescribe a 4 day course Metronidazole for patients with bowel problems that were felt to be IBS related, as he said it worked in a lot of cases. I also have an elderly friend who gets flare ups of diverticulosis and she is always prescribed Metronidazole to clear up any infection in the pockets of the bowel.
