Afternoon, recently found out I have IBS, i think I have had it for a while but for some reason only started getting worse this year.
Can anyone advise on what food and drinks to avoid and what food and drinks help.
No matter what I eat or drink bloates me like mad, I am only 26 and feel like I carnt wear anything nice, just loose clothing so that no one notices my belly, I basically go to the bathroom once a week, I have 2 meals, a day bowl of ceral after tea and odd cup of coffee and water through day.
My belly aches all time i always have trapped wind and sometimes can be soar to touch, the bloating can make me feel tired and sluggish all day.
A friend as advised to restart my diet see which foods affect me. I was given some shakes by my doctor which is to help me go to the toilet regular.

I recommend getting a copy of Professor Whorwell's book "Take Control of Your IBS". It compacts everything he has learned in 35 years of practice into a simple, short guide. It is very useful. But just a few tips...ditch the cereal while you are in a flare-up. Ditch harsh fibres. Ditch the coffee. Take a laxative at the same time every day. Get the book and educate yourself fully on your condition. The average doctor has no idea about IBS so be careful if they start throwing drugs at you.
So, basically. No eating or drinking anything that could irritate your gut until your symptoms are under control and educate yourself on your condition better than your doctors.
The main thing that really helped my ibs was to stop taking anything that had cows milk in it. The Difference was amazing. I use goats milk and if I fancy cheese I have goats or ewes or any as long as no cows milk. I know if I’ve eaten anything with the slightest bit of cows milk in it because my stomach swells and I get terrible cramps and have to resort to taking Buscopan.
Look into the fodmap diet. Treat it as a list of things to keep an eye on for starters. There may be something surprising in the list that you eat/drink regularly. It’s a good place to start and over time you can eliminate the foods that don’t affect you.
