Ok here goes I have had bowel problems since I can remember but I currently go to the toilet regularly but it’s literally once a week I get no feeling to go for the toilet no needs just once a week I feel the urge I go it’s a fair big size but then I’m fine again for a week this isn’t my problem my major problem is gas I literally can’t pass gas until I lay down I can’t pass gas when I’m standing only when laying down or in some type of weird bending over positions and I bloat all day until I can get relief from one of these positions I’m wondering if this happens to anyone else or anyone has experienced it at all any help would be great thanks also this gas thing has being going on for like 2 years

Hi Jlojlojlo have had similar experiences as yours but I am on tablets which are listed as causing wind. However no sign or feeling of needing to go to the loo is worrying. I went on

a tablet for an inner ear problem which relaxed not only that nerve but the bowel nerves.

I was just like you I couldn't see the train coming! f you are on any drugs which relax muscles then this might be a reason why. The gas problem is a sure sign you are not digesting the food properly. If you get other symptoms such as diahorrea this may be part of a bowel infection following a cold or can be a major sign of food intolerance.

I went to Alphega chemist chain and had a test for 64 foods, and it threw up the cause of my problems. Since removing the list of foods, have improved but am still having some gas symptoms. it is better when I use fibre gel sachets as a drink in orange or lemon flavour as, the gel is able to absorb the excess water in the large colon and help the alarm response of needing to go and stops the one a week syndrome. However there is a new test which works on a breath test which is called Aire and is sold online by Foodmarble. Not usre if you can buy it from UK website. It is an app, and it detects what foods are upsetting your colon, with the gas. It is on offer

for about 125 dollars. I always drink filtered water as I don't like the taste of tap water and wash my vegetables and fruit in filtered water. As you know there are common food irritants such as red meat red wine bran and foods with high roughage and fats in cheese.

Leaky gut is another problem which may be induced from a diet too high in carbs.

Your problem does not seem stress linked but the syndrome can ruin your life. Ask your doctor for help. He might let you have food intolerance tests such as dairy gluten and others- it depends on your area. Take care.

Thanks for your reply hawii60 my doctor has diagnosed me with irritable bowel syndrome (ibs) but at the time my gas wasn’t a problem but I’ve been told that if passing a stool once a week is normal to me and happens every week then there isn’t a cause for concern as there is no specific guidelines set out for when you should go and how many times you should go the only worrying part for me at the moment is the fact I can’t pass gas until I lay down all day the gas will build up and build up and I don’t feel it nearing the end to press it out it just sticks in my gut but as soon as I lay down it comes out with ease I use charcoal tablets and they are a godsend at times I’m going to try other stuff today and see if there is a change I have looked into leaky gut and sibo but it’s just the fact of the position I need to put myself in before I can pass gas

This is incorrect advice I feel and would have a second even a third opinion. It is not normal to only go once a week.

My son was the same with a weekly clear out. He was so happy after hecleared the toxic waste. Is it difficult to ease the wind as you are at work? If you have a grain allergy starting the day with a slice of toast and marmalade or cereal and milk the same daily pattern of eating certain foods may set you off.

. Can you bend or sit on your heels to release the gas? Or lean forward in a sitting position? You might try acupressure on your hands. Squeeze between each finger, and press the centre of your hand with circular movements pressing between the thumb and the first finger too. If you find the areas sensitive when you squeeze then it might indicate a nerve which is being affected. What acupressure does is transfer a stimulus to the nerves leading to your body encouraging blood flow.

When you look at yourself do you see the area under the rib cage expand so it is uncomfortable or does the wind make your profile much bigger?

Taking sips of hot water as you wake up might help. Can the gas be explained with swallowing air or by having too much mucous? Eliana is probably right about some vegetables and fruit being indigestible. Apples and bananas are usually easier to digest than some citric fruits and fibrous fruits. Look at your lifestyle - is it stressful and are there any other problems nagging in the background?

Liquorice or, rhubarb, or magnesium carbonate can help some people, but expect you know what suits you. If stress is a cause of the IBS then Mbeverine definitely helped me as it targets the colon muscle without making you feel as if you are on a tranquilliser. I would go back to a different doctor in your practise and ask for some medication for the IBS. You might be able to get tests on the NHS for food intolerances.

The gas is most likely a combination of things. One may be fiber, like beans, cabbage, nuts, fruits, vegetables. All of these have a fair amount of fiber, and fiber can cause gas, especially if you begin to eat more Fiber than you normally do..or start on fiber supplements. Another could be, you need to have a bowel movement more than once a week. I know that when I have a lot of flatulence, it won't stop until I have a movement. It is your body's way of telling you, you may be constipated. Constipation is defined as having three or less bowel movements a week. So, although you feel you may produce with one bowel movement a week, it is not enough. Another explanation is drinking from a straw which can produce a lot of air in your bowels and cause this. My concern is that you only go once a week. Have you been to a gastroenterologist? Have been diagnosed with anything? Ulcers? Heart burn, gastritis, hiatal hernia, pelvic floor dysfunction? Have you had an upper GI or lower bowel follow through? Or an anal mamnotry test to test your Spinchter muscle strength. Do you take antacids like pepsid? Does it help? I would definitely recommend seeing a colon and rectal specialist, gastroenterologist, have a digital rectal exam, or see what is advised by them. Keep us posted..

Well sounds like Hirschsprungs disorder (happens primarily in infancy, butthe retention of massive stools and letting that out weekly sounds like just that, asassuming you are older than an infant (adolescent or adult). Many people recommend a saline enema to clean out the colon/rectum. I would seek medical advice, as this doesnt sound like IBS to me. It could be functional constipation as well. I amnot a doc, but an IBS sufferer, so I can only give what I experience (predominately painful intestinal cramping followed by diarrhoea that can be from mild to outright uncontrollable and violent causing some embarrassing public accidents. That I can explain, but I am assuming that your situation might be an adult form of Hirschsprungs syndrome or functional constipation. I would suggest getting medical advice and treatment. Hope this helps!

My son had the same problem as a youngster. But he had a lot of allergies when growing up, was touch and food sensitive, and turned to a meat free diet. He would only eat fish or white meat. Now he is in his late forties no problems at all.

Hi - a few tips might help from enaturalhealing.com grandma's secret cures for constipation. You can ask for food intolerance tests for well known allergies such as egg dairy and gluten on NHS. Hope it resolves with right help.

Yes I would ask for a referral to a gastroenterologist as you need further advice. It is not clear whether you are in pain but I think I would ask for a referral if it is affecting your life. There are lots of tests they can do but it is difficult to say the best thing.

Thanks everyone for advice currently sat at doctors to let them know my symptoms and see what they can do for me the week without the toilet does not hurt at all in the slightest it’s the same for my mothers side of the family they all have ibs and don’t have bowel movements for a week or more at a time and it has been that way for them for life so I’m not worried about the weekly toilet situation it’s the not being able to pass gas while standing that is annoying if I eat certain foods like Indian food and only from certain Indians I bag up straight away and they’re is no way for me to pass gas other than lying completely flat on my belly or back and sucking in my belly and I release wind apart from that the feeling to pass gas doesn’t come at all when I’m standing or sitting up I have currently helped my symptoms slightly over past few days by a combination of activated charcoal tablets and probiotics bacteria tablets I will let everyone know my doctors advice but thanks for the advice any advice on the gas situation would be greatly appreciated
