Hi! I’m new here. I’ve been constipated for a week. I have been going to the toilet but I’m still getting cramps in my lower stomach. Can you all tell me where you get cramps, how long can they last after you’ve had a few bowel movements. Thank you please help xx

Hi Beth, I'm sorry I can't offer a solution, but I can empathise with you. I get cramps daily lasting for 6hours +AFTER a bowel movement, my Gastrologist is baffled as normally a bowel movement brings relief not the opposite. I've had lots of tests /scans/camera up & down/pain clinic attendance to no avail. It's affecting my quality of life & ive got pain induced depression(no surprise!)I'm sure there will be people on here who may be able to help you,.I've found it seems a rare thing to get pain After a bowel movement. Wishing you all the best.

Hi Beth, I completely empathise, I have been constipated for over a week now, going to the toilet but hard stools etc., never really feel like I empty the bowel. It's tough going, but afterwards I get cramps and I get groin pain especially in the right groin. It goes on for hours. To be honest my whole pelvis area feels bloated and in pain. I always end up with a hot water bottle and ibuprofen. It is horrid, it will ease but then flare up again, that is part of our awful IBS C or D or both. Try not to worry, try to relax, deep breathe, use strategies that ease, in terms of rubbing your tummy gently, music, tv, distraction etc., plus cushioning your tummy with a pillow if you lie down. You will get a good patch soon, I promise. Always here for you.

Hi, i sometimes get cramps before, during and after loo time. Located right across my pelvis/lower belly - below bellybutton. Buscapan does nothing for me but peppermint capsules from holland and barrett really help. Worth a try if you have not already.

Have you tried probiotics - optibac have a lot of information on their website? I have yakult this helps things stay regular.

Also have you tried flax seeds? A lot of people swear by them for IBS C

Hope you find something that works for you and the cramps - very upsetting I am sure.

Will put you on my prayer list that you will get the answer soon to helping yourself in the best way with this.

I know everyone is individual and it helps to try different things until you find the best thing. Not easy though.

Don't give up hope there are a lot of people that have found help here. You always have a sympathetic ear here too,

You need to take a high amount of magnesium citrate or oxide. About 800 to 1200mg. I have had Ibs c almost my whole life and am now in my fifties. This is the best natural supplement to take for this condition and I have tried many. Even my consultant recommended it. I take it every day. You must take it on an empty stomach just before bed with lots of water. I would start with a high dose initially just to clear you out. Even if it means taking a few capsules. I sometimes take 6 200mg capsules. Capsules are the best not tablets and it has to be citrate or oxide as these are the ones that work for constipation. There is a lot of information about constipation and magnesium on the internet. The ones I take are either Now foods Magnesium citrate, Solgar Magnesium Citrate or Life extensions. I get mine from the US on a site called iHerb, but you can get them on Amazon. There are other magnesium oxide products specifically for colon cleansing called Mag 07, Colosan and Oxypowder. They are a bit expensive but are amazing. I use these in between. No cramps no bloating, just relief. You can get these on Amazon as well. Don't suffer any longer. By the way I also follow a low fodmap diet through a dietician but this alone does not help constipation.
