White Bread & Bread Products

Hi,

This may be a silly question but does anyone have any reasonable explanation why I can eat white bread (for example a couple of slices of toast for breakfast and a sandwich later in the day) but have IBS side effects to white dough balls and products like that?

My explanation atm is that my stomach is an idiot however am sure there is an actual reason.

Thank you

A problem with Gluten?

Would that not be in both of them? I am careful of having too much gluten but just wondered

Im not sure you would need to look it up. Another thing might be Lactose that might be in the dough balls if they are made using milk.

Dough balls may be made from a higher gluten content flour. Just enough extra to cause the problem.

Definitely depends on ingredients. My mother cannot eat Hovis without trouble but can happily eat other bread brands.

What are you eating the dough balls with? I liked the way you called your stomach an idiot I have called mine a lot worse than that

Oh i totally call it worse than that normally but thought i would be polite :-) 🙈

Soft/non fully cooked bread/dough is very heavy on the stomach like with pizza if not cooked fully many get more than the trots! There is so much Gunk in mass produced wheat mixtures!

We went to pizza hut years back one i had wasn't done right next day laid up in bed!

I am having a similar problem of eating bread, bagels, pita from one local bakery just fine and another gives my stomach a good going over! The only thing I could think of was either some preservatives they may put in it (unlikely) or a different type of yeast? (Also not sure why that would cause an issue?)

I can eat certain types of breads others a no go... unfortunately it's trail and error I'm really happy I've found an olive bread that I can tolerate now I'm addicted to it!

Although I don’t have a answer to your question all I can say is that over the years i’ve found that foods I can eat no problem one week then have issues the following week, canny work it out?

I believe toasted bread is easier to digest - some of the carbs begin to break down ( would have to Google to get facts). Also sourdough is easier on the guts than normal bread. I also avoid rye (fodmap) and heavy grain and seeded loaves

It does sound odd but maybe yeast content or bleach used to whiten flour?

Yes thats what I thought. Wondered if after a lifetime of eating mostly white bread daily I may have had Candida. So have been taking probiotic complex daily. Now eating wholemeal wraps or potato bread. And bloating/acid reflux have almost gone.

My son is really struggling at moment. We had been doing low FODMAP diet. Reintroduced gluten starting with a wrap then white bread. Had part baked rolls New Year’s Eve and we’re back to square one!

More gluten in rolls etc and more yeast, thats just my guess. I am also alright with plain sliced bread, and toasted in supposed to be better. It also depends how much you eat, i am ok eating a slice of toast in the morning, but if i then had a sandwich for lunch and bread again in the evening, then there would be a problem

I'm the same with my stomach - I was tested for coeliac disease (gluten intolerance) and that was negative. Any type of white bread triggers my IBS, so I tried wholemeal bread but eventually found a local bakery brown bread was better - I'm not sure why but it might be the additives in commercially baked bread can be an issue. I also started baking my own bread (much easier than you think!). But even being cautious I still can't eat more than 4 small slices or 2 large slices a day because of the fibre content. And yes, my stomach seems to be an idiot as well!

Could be the garlic in doughballs too. I find any combination of things like dairy and gluten together can be a problem x
