been recently diagnosed with IBS-D (make that urgent, uncontrollable D) and it seems like everything triggers it! My doctor did not recommend trying the low fodmap diet (and I don't think I could!), so I've been trying to eat more healthily while avoiding IBS. As per my gastro doc, I am taking IBgard in the mornings (a peppermint oil supplement) before breakfast. Between that and cutting way back on caffeine my symptoms have improved a lot, but I still get sideswiped by crap attacks occasionally. It's made me a bit afraid to travel! I also don't eat out much, to avoid the whole embarrassment of the D.
Can anyone share common food triggers? So far I've figured out to avoid mushrooms and berries of any type.

Good morning. We are all different but I avoid onions, garlic, chilli and the list goes on. I follow the fodmap diet, it really isn't that bad. I also use lactose free milk, cheese and yogurt and take acidophilus probiotic. Good luck xx
For me dairy is a trigger even whey powder in foods!! Also pork and processed meats! I'm still having attacks So now trying to be wheat free!!
Caffeine is a trigger too, but I cannot survive without my morning coffee! So choose to suffer with that one!!
It's so difficult finding out what are our triggers as for instance I have in the past eaten a bacon butty and been fine, but then found another time I eat one I suffer!! So really not sure if it is a trigger or not, but once I have an attack and I try and eliminate that food!
I think it's better to make a safe list and stick to that for a while!! I tend to be ok on chicken and rice so often I'll just eat that!! 😂😂xx
I went totally gluten free to try to reduce my thyroid antibodies - it worked. Then I started low carb high fat after I was given a huge course of steroids for inflammatory arthritis and it caused steroid induced T2 diabetes. So now I am on a low carb, high fat gluten free diet, my gut feels great and my IBS has totally settled down.
I was a bit worried about how I would manage to be GF and LCHF at the same time but it works. Mainly I stick with the GF and fit the LCHF around that. That my diet helped my IBS was a real unexpected bonus.
I’m afraid I haven’t a clue what triggers my IBS. I can cope with D but C is the absolute worst for me. I find it all pretty random too . One minute I would be fine then all of a sudden the constipation would kick in and somehow or another I know in my gut without even needing to go that when I do I’ll be constipated. Weird and horrible.
Welchol and Colestipol and the BEST meds. for chronic diarrhea. I take Colestipol twice a day for mine, and both these meds. stop diarrhea in it's tracks. The doctors will tell you these are just for lowering cholesterol and to treat type II diabetes, but they're also bile acid sequestrants, hence, they stop the diarrhea! Talk to your doctor. There's no need to suffer with this.
I to was diagnosed with IBS and lately have found that everything i eat makes my IBS flare up. I don't about you but i suffer severe Abdominal Pain. Had to call out emergency doctors on numerous occasions, it's got so bad and I couldn't suffer it anymore I tried to commit suicide, i was referred to the Mental Health Team and my Mental Health Nurse told me to ask my Gp to refer to see a Specialist. Ive had the camera up my back passage which showed up nothing.
It was suggested to me that it could be Crohns or Celiac Disease. I know in some people that certain foods cause flare ups but that isn't the case with me. I to dont travel anywhere or eat out as I'm afraid my IBS flares up. I've had most medication you can get, but at the moment I take Alverine and Ibuprofen. Hope this helps you and you feel better
Have u been checked for h pylori, candida/sibo or intolerance testing.
I have ibs goes between both unfortunatley.
I had candida after a dose of strong antibiotics which made a tolerable ibs into nitemare!
I stay away from onions, garlic, spicey food, yeast, gluten and dairy!
Basically i eat clean... veg, chicken, turkey. Give urself two weeks of that and see if it changes ur belly? If it does ur know it food related if it doesnt then it could b anxiety or stress related.
No alcohols ( beers ciders especially as full of yeast gluten and sugar)
Keep it to low sugar ie vodka and gins and diet lemonades or mixers!
Sorry but it plain plain plain!!!
Since i decided i was fed up
Of suffering anymore and did this i have been ok!
That was 18 months ago now.
Plus i take a probiotic, digestive enzyme and peppermint capsules before eat. Just to help digest food then eat . Take about 20-30 mins before
onions , garlic ( even in powder form for marinating ) , corn even corn starch , high fructose corn syrup ( mostly found in fruit juices ) Artificial sweeteners found mostly on " sugar free " stuff even chewing gum and candies , carbonated drinks , dairy products ..and take the celiac blood test to rule out your sensitivity or intolerance to gluten ..to take the test you have to eat foods that contain gluten bread , pasta .. etc so that the test can detect the antibodies that are released when you eat gluten
...every thing should be well cooked never raw ..this is just a few from the long list of foods that i can't eat ..the list goes on 😳😩 Always read the label for ingredients that might include the above foods..as every thing in the markets include either garlic or onions or corn .. I ended up cooking my food at home from scratch ..which is a very limited strict diet ..bland and boring 😓😟
Examples of hidden garlic , onion powders are ketchup , barbecue sauce " basicly most sauces out there ) and ready sold tomato pastes !!
Hi jawsfan7 like 2 other replies, i suggest FODMAP way of eating. It has kept my IBS D away for 6 months now and I can live my life again. It helps to read the book "Low Fodmap Diet" by dr. Sue Shepherd. You will learn why you can eat a little of something with no reaction while a lot will cause diarrhea.good luck
