Hi I have posted this on the PA site but it may be relevant to many here.

If you feel your inability to eat many things due to adverse reactions could be B12 deficiency, get your B12 serum blood test done before taking any B12

Hi all, for as long as I can remember I have had problems with digesting many different food types. Not being able to eat gluten, milk products, and many types of sugars, sweeteners too. More lately finding meat a problem too, as it took so long to transit my gut, I would feel quite ill after eating all types of meat. Since I have been self injecting B12 every other day, now for a month and a half, after my B12 serum was tested and found to be 178 (range 150-900) even after a month of sublingual b12 it was 178. After a further month it was 456 but I still had many symptoms. Which is why I eventually started SI . Well I have been experimenting with various food types and I am not having the horrid reactions I used to get, many of the symptoms I had have also lessened considerably, though if I try and go four days between injections some of the nerve type things come back such as involuntary jaw movements in which I bit great chunks out of my inner cheek or lip or tongue, often when trying to eat carefully!

Is it normal that B12 would have such an effect? My folate was quite normal.

Hi jointpain. I have pa too and I also had loads of mouth problems eg recurring ulcers, constantly biting my cheeks and lips by accident.y mouth was so sore and because of the swelling ,you accidently bite over and over even when just talking. Could never work out what it was caused by . B12 deficiency ,? Dry mouth because of diabetes or the meds I was on.? It got put right when I cut out wheat, stopped taking sertrali e for depression ,got my diabetes under control and put back on thyroxine which was took off me abruptly after being on it for sixteen yrs. Still got no idea what sorted it out in the end. Caused me so much stress.

Hi there,

Could you tell me more about PA? I don't know what that is.

Came across this article on the Dr Axe website linking vitamin D, joint pain and digestion. Many IBS sufferers are low in vitamins D and B12. I always thought this was about digestion. The article mentions how the elderly have gut problems and vit 12 deficiency when they produce less stomach acid to break down foods that release vit 12. Interesting stuff!

PA is pernicious anemia, which has it's own site here on healthunlocked .com. So give them a looksee

You say you started SI. Can you tell me, are they injecting you with B12? Or are you still injecting yourself.
