Putting things in to perspective.

So lots of you have probably read a few posts of mine and know my troubles with my stomach. My fear is thinking I have cancer somewhere in my body which is resulting in the diarreah and wierd stomach feelings but having sat down and taken time to logically think about it, maybe it’s not cancer and it’s a number of other things? I don’t get full up easily, I don’t vomit, I just have occasionally an uncomfortable stomach or constipation/diarreah with that sudden urge to go. I need to pluck up the courage to go to the drs but I think I’ve taken a big step in my ‘health anxiety life’ to think about it rationally rather than irrationally. Anyone else overcome their fears and understand where I’m coming from?x

Hi Kate, so sorry you are troubled with anxiety about seeing your doctor. I felt the same way for a long time too. Eventually, I did speak to a GP, who was quite dismissive of my 'upset tummy' and incredibly patronising. The result of this was that I continued to manage my symptoms myself for a while and worked out what many of my triggers are.

Then on an unrelated visit I was fortunate enough to see a different GP who was interested in my digestive health issues. He admitted to not knowing much about it, but took me seriously. It was a relief to finally get this problem out in the open. I have now had some blood tests etc. and am seeing a consultant next week.

I suggest that if there is a doctor at your practice that you are comfortable with, you could start with them. Or, you could even make an appointment with the practice nurse and get them to advise on what you should do. This may be as simple as, you should see a doctor, but that might give you the impetus to go ahead.

I think it is human nature to fear the worst, and it is only too easy to scare yourself silly. Take courage and get this investigated, it may not be as bad as you think, and if you get some help too, that's a bonus.

Prof. Whorwell's Take Control of your IBS might set your mind at rest, Kate.

Hi kate8433, yes I too suffer from health anxiety. I do have a number of long term health conditions which I am trying to come to terms with but I find it hard to believe the Dr's when they tell me I don't have cancer as I often feel very unwell. I am so glad you have been able to think more logically about what's going on, I'm still working on it! Take care X
