Bit of a strange question, does anyone eat bananas or stasumas... really want to try them but scared they’ll make me sick 😢

Know it’s stupid but thoughts?

It isn't stupid at all. The fear with me is constantly there. Personally I can cope with bananas but them it is the fructose with me. You don't want them overripe though if fructose is a trigger for you too.

Thank you for your reply I’m glad you don’t think I’m stupid... I just know how sick I can get if I eat the wrong thing.

I’m just worried I’ll consume too much sugars, I’m not really sure if I can have fructose I just avoid it just in case

I find I’m fine with both of these fruits

You are not stupid by no means-everyone is different. For me I don't eat either because

Satsuma and Oranges make me feel sick and Bananas if I have the occasional one gives me

indigestion.

I have a banana everyday with my cereal and don’t seem to have any problems I personally prefer the firm rather then over ripe but unfortunately I think you’ll have to try ‘trail & error’ to see what works for you....maybe start with half a fruit (if you have someone who can share it with you?)

My bigger down falls are greasy/spices foods....& veggies like peppers & leeks/Brussels...& possibly cauliflower after this week... 😞

I am the same. Bananas are fine for me but vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower and brussels definitely no no. These vegs are gas producing and if you have IBS it can cause a flare up.

Yeah i read over ripe bananas are bad. Eat them firm. Limit satsumas to one or two a day. Of course if they are a trigger for you be careful. Xx

Everyone is different and you won't know until you try. But I can eat both with no problem.

Hi unripe bananas will have very little sugar, should not effect IBS. Ripe ones are not acceptable. So greenish ones or just ripe would be ok. Sutsumas are no good. Good luck

I didn’t know that I always eat ripe as was always told firm would give me stomache ache !

Yeah I have always got a stomach ache with firm bananas. Even before IBS.

Take a look at the "low FODMAP" diet on line, it's for IBS sufferrers and has made my life liveable again. No sugar of any sort. Good luck

Hi, as most ibs friends have said it is very much trial and error. Personally I have no problem with bananas and find the ripe ones to be more digestible but satsumas and any other citrus fruits are a no-no. However for you it may be different. It is scary trying out something that you know might give you an upset stomach but it's the only way to know for sure.

You are definitely not stupid. As others have said and according to low FODMAP, unripe bananas are ok. If you eat ripe only a little, less than 56g. Clementines, mandarins and oranges are ok. I am seeing a dietician, referred by my GP, who has been very helpful. She has given me a very useful booklet on reducing fermentable carbohydrates the low fodmap way which is produced by Kings College London. It's only available through a dietician. There is also an app so you can check barcodes. I have found it very useful.

Hope this helps. It's trial and error as we are all different.

They are the two fruits I have always digested the best. But I didn't have both in the same day (fructose intolerance).

I would start off slowly, maybe with half a satsuma and see how you go. Next week you could try half a banana instead. if you go slowly you should be able to work out just how much of each you can tolerate.

Not what you're looking for?
