9 year old sons “constipation “

Hi Everyone, after 6 years my son has finally been referred to a specialist after years of being told he will grow out of Chronic constipation.

We haven’t seen our specialist yet but son recently had a trip to a&e and then overnight stays as he had many blockages and poop fluid backed up into his intestines, long and short of 2 enemas later we was sent home. MY question is how long will it take to stop leaking ?

I feel like his dealt with this for so long sometimes he doesn’t even know if he needs to go

It’s upsetting for both of us and I just no longer no what to do

ANY HELP PLEASE XX

See the specialist as soon as possible. That is all you can really do.

I sorry I don't have an answer to your question but I'm interested to know if your son has tried cod liver oil, lactulose or docusate sodium to help relieve the constipation?

Hi I’ve never tried cod liver oil but over the years they’ve changed his medication several times movicol (which his been prescribed now 6 sachets a day with sodium pisco) also lactulose and laxido along with all the natural remedies fig syrup, prunes smoothies, chia seeds etc

At the moment he is just more or less leaking im hoping it settles down over the Easter term as his so conscious of wear the pads to school I just feel so bad for him

Hi I was wondering because my sister had to use it when she was young. Myself, I'm older and have IBS c/d and use the docusate sodium as a softener and the lactulose when necessary. Plus I add certain dietary fibres like oatmeal, lentils, raspberries, pears, broccoli, courgettes, and kiwi to assist.

I know the problem with the pads and feel for your son, because my daughter had to use them for awhile when her paediatrician gave her some other oil based treatment for constipation and she was not a happy camper either.

I hope your appointment with the specialist is very soon. This is an urgent situation and an awful predicament for your son to be in.

Hi, i’m 22 and started suffering from ibs when I was 12 - I’m not sure if you’re aware but I just learned over the weekend that there are two types of dietary fibres. Insoluble and soluble. If you’re son has chronic constipation- along with seeing a specialist, i’d recommend trying to get him to eat more insoluble foods as soluble soaks up water. Insoluble foods are things like ‘All Bran, fruits etc’- I know they are nothing compared to coco-pops or rice crispies but they are full of fibre.

I struggle with constipation and in the past it has been chronic - where I couldn’t get to A&E because no one was around and I couldn’t drive. The only thing that worked for me during that episode was black coffee - probably not great trying to get a 9 year old to drink it but anything to relieve the pain. Also protein shakes and fruit smoothies help for me - again not great for a 9 year old but anything to help slightly. X

Thanks for your advice I’ve actually tried to make him drink black coffee just to see if it would help but he couldn’t drink it!

Ironically for a kid he doesn’t like things like coco pops etc and actually eats a small bowl of bran most mornings and fruit well put it this way he can eat a whole pineapple and box of strawberries in one sitting and it doesn’t do anything this is why I just don’t know what to do anymore they did mention to me his bowels may not be producing enough enzymes and it was something the specialist I’m just hoping this appointment comes through as quickly as possible

Thanks again for the reply going to look into the insoulabl foods now xx
