Constipation

My husband has had severe constipation for over two weeks now. He has been to our GP who prescribed strong laxatives, but he has had very little relief. He is very worried, imagining all sorts of things. Any advice would be welcome.

Hopefully, the doctor advised drinking a LOT of water and questioned him about eating habits... a lot of meat and grain food can add to constipation woes...he also needs to eat a lot of high fiber veggies and fruits. Did the doctor mention an enema...like Fleets?? Maybe a phone call to the doctor would help reassure and encourage him?? Good luck!!

Thank you Betty for your reply. He has been to GP but no luck so far! His diet is generally good and he drinks lots of water. Has managed to get to see GP later today. Obviously we are both really worried.

I have been hospitalised with severe constipation and the pain of it before so my heart goes out to him.

I had to have enemas to clear mine. I would imagine that would be their next course of action, but if he is in dreadful pain and stomach hard, get him to A&E just in case he has a bowel obstruction.

My problems with constipation eased significantly when I changed my diet and cut out wheat ( you don’t necessarily have to cut all gluten containing foods) I also take laxido daily, it’s a gentle way of pulling fluids into the bowel to help pass hard stools.

Also it’s good if your hubby can see a dietitian to get advice on his diet moving forward and possibly ask the GP if he can see a bowel specialist to check there are no other issues going on.

Hope things import right for him.

HI sick and sore,

Very interest to have your comments on Laxido. I,am awaiting my second prolapsed bowel operation..cancelled,three,times..no,beds..but I’ve,been on Various,Things for, chronic and I mean chronic constipation and very times up to,eight times a day..I asked for,so asked dr for something different .

She prescribed laxido..first,day I took a sachet morning and evening ..that did not work..then i had a very sore throat and maybe overdid, the blueberries and juice..not sure ..still nothing happened so,I,took, two, sachets night and morning just that time, then I,had three, days of explosive,Diarrhear, which I never get..so,I havenotmusd it since.. have you any comments on Laxido that might help..

Thank you

I have found with Laxido it takes a few days for my system to get used to it, it doesn't always work on the first try so can take a few days for the effects to take place

One of my friends found that he had a scar from a hernia op that partially blocked the bowel - just mentioning in case has had a hernia op that might be worth mentioning to GP if relevant, if it continues. Can be fixed with an op.

I have chronic constipation. I have been to private consultant and had the tests done. There are two new drugs that you can get on the NHS called Prucalopride and Linaclotide. The don't work like traditional laxatives, they work on the receptors in the stomach. They should give it to you if nothing else works. It is on the NICE guidelines and you should say this to your doctor. Linaclotide which I take now is amazing. Works within hours. It is not like Laxido or Movicol which does nothing for me and makes me bloated. What I also take in between is about 600 to 1000mg of magnesium citrate or oxide on an empty stomach before bed with lots of water. This works great, naturally and is effective. My colorectal consultant recommended it as well. Look up information on magnesium and constipation. If I don't take it I don't go.

There are other magnesium products for the colon that are excellent although more expensive but worth it. They are in order of my preference, Oxypowder, Aerobic Mag07 and Colosan. You can get them on Amazon or a place called the Finchley clinic. They are very helpful and you can call for advice. Hope this helps.

Having given up on my GP I use Acai Berry. Can not face going back to GP now that colonoscopy showed nothing. It might cause weight lose but better than C. I can now just manage it and don't actually take everyday, just when needed. However the wind it gives me is not good so I try to take at night. No awful shocks or dashes to loo.
