One of the best natural herbal remedies I have found for constipation is herblax from Shaklee.com. It is not like other laxatives, it is not a laxative at all, it works gently on your system overnight and it is also a great bowel cleanser,

Flaxseeds, sometimes called Linseeds, I have a spoonful every day, a lot of people take a magnesium citrate supplement before bed. Activia yogurts definitely help me. Try one daily with some flaxseeds mixed in.

I'm using 1 1/2 Tbsp of ground flax seed every day and it's working like a charm. I've spent 62 years dealing with severed constipation that resulted in too many hospital trips that were more than embarrassing. For me, I would go without a BM for almost two weeks and absolutely nothing worked whether prescribed (and they tried everything) or otherwise but wow......it's been over a month and knock on wood, I've been fine.

The best natural supplement to take is magnesium citrate or oxide about 600 to 1000mg every night before bed on an empty stomach with lots of water. I have have had Ibs c for many years and tried everything perscription and otherwise and this is the best ever. If I don't take it I don't go. Google magnesium and constipation and you will get so much information. Magnesium draws water into the bowel and you don't get any cramps as with other conventional laxatives. Even the herbal ones cause cramps. I have taken them. You can look on Amazon. There is also a product called Oxy powder, mag 07 or Colosan, you can search on Amazon or Finchley clinic. They are magnesium products especially for colon cleansing. Amazing as well. A bit more expensive but worth it. Look them up and the reviews by others. Let me know how you get on.

Im sorry that you have had to suffer for so long :( Great thank you! do you find that when you stop taking it, the constipation is much worse? that is what happens to me when i use laxatives for a wile then stop, i get so much more clogged up :(

Hi the magnesium is a supplement not a laxative, so if you jave severe constipation it will help you and it is fine to take daily. I can't believe the difference it has made. If you have a severe problem, linseeds (which I also take) probiotics etc alone will not help. Give magnesium a try.

I have been taking probiotics and they really do me no good so magnesium supplement is defo on the list!

A natural way would be heat for example hot water bottle to ease the discomfort and usually once the swelling has gone down you find that your bowel movements become more normal again. Also hot lemon water in the morning first thing or at any further points in the day too. Lemon helps to get your bowels moving and regulate you a natural way. I dont think its good to take laxatives as it weakens your body from being able to go itself and youd find it would be reliant on them. Also drinking plenty of water. If you want to take something to help things along take buscopan as it will help with the bloat and cramp.

Yes lemon water does wonders! Thank you!

I take a double whammy of magnesium at night-time. I take magnesium glycinate from Solaray 400mg and then I have some Natural Calm. This totally regulates me.

I'd say as well maybe get your thyroid checked - IBS - C can show up in advance of an underactive thyroid.

If you're going to try taking flaxseeds/linseeds, drink lots and lots of water. I ended up with worse constipation and had to take industrial strength laxative! Not pretty :-) I take flaxseed oil supplements and this also helps plus makes my skin nice.

Good luck x

Word of warning though, build up slow with magnesium as all at once would cause you diarrhea and a sore tummy. First week try one capsule, then two etc. Also with the Natural Calm - half a teaspoon was all I could handle at first. Then you can build it up. The way I used it was to add half a teaspoon to an empty cup, then pour a wee bit of boiling water in. It will froth and mix it and once the frothing dies down, add cold water to it so you don't burn your mouth then drink it. The frothing activates it.

metamucil. but YOU MUST DRINK LOTD AND LOTS OF WATER. A TSP. IN 8 OZ'S WATER/MIX WELL AND DRINK. IT IS ORANGE FLAVOR AND OK BUT YOU M U S T BE SURE TO DRINK LOTS OF WATER. IT WILL TAKE 2 OR 3 DAYS TO WORK. IT IS GOOD FOR LOWERING CHOLESTEROL TOO WHICH IS A SIDE BONUS. IT IS FIBRE AND GOOD FOR THE SYSTEM. BETTER THAN CHEMICAL STOOL SOFTENERS TOO. HELP THIS HELPS.

I have the same problem. Some days I have the abdomen of a well advanced pregnancy! I take Bisocodyl daily 1/2 tablets. Laxido sachet every day. I avoid gluten and eat healthily, no prepackaged "food". Do not let yourself go more than 2 days without increasing the Bisocodyl and laxido. Exercise encourages bowel motility. Also if you get painful bowel cramps ask your GP for Mebeverine. It's a bowel relaxer. Best of luck

Thanks, unfortunately mobeverine and laxido really irritated my stomach quite a bit :( iwill try some more exercise but it is so hard when your constantly bloated

Hi, don't think this has been mentioned, but have you tried the supplement capsule "Cascara Sagrada" It works well for me... sometimes I only have to use half a capsule. Good luck to you! Glad you posted this question, because I think so many of the replies are really helpful and have given me some new ideas. Take care.

Thank you, what is the main ingredient in the supplement? is it magnesium?

BettyA profile image
BettyA in reply to NailQueenxo

No, this comes from the Cascara Sagrada bush/tree. Its the bark part that is aged and used..... its the only ingredient in the capsule... You could probably Google it and find out lots more about it. Good luck to you, NQ!!...Hope you have a good wknd.

Yes! Traditional Medicinals Smooth Move herbal tea! It has senna in it and works like a charm. All natural and very, very effective!! Give it a try!!

I have found that constipation seems to be my new default setting. I've still to try magnesium but so far the only food that gets me going regularly is dates.

I have the complete opposite and it's terrible, go the bathroom at least 15 times a day... I find that caffeine affects it... Do you eat chocolate, drinks teas, coffee, wine, lettuce, prune juice ? May help to move things along. Also try peppermint tea for bloating and lots of lemon water the more hydrated you are and the healthier you eat you will be less prone to constipation

Also try flaxseeds , chia seeds in your water if all fails then take the natural supplement called Senna

Try peppermint oil or peppermint tea. I drink peppermint tea everyday and it seems to keep my bowel going. Camomile and fennel also help but I'm not fond of the taste. :-)
