Hi, I have suffered from IBS (D) for more than 20 years, I have good months and bad. More recently they have been bad and I am desperate for help. I usually have to rely on Imodium to stop things so I can get to work but has anymore got any suggestions? I am already gluten free and try to watch what I eat. I used to know what my triggers were but recently I can't seem to eat anything!

Hi there,

Sorry to hear of your health problem. I also suffer from ibs, predominantly D but sometimes C. I try to stick to a diet of soluble fibre and low fat. Food such as bananas, white rice and bread and pasta. Also skinless chicken and fish. It definitely helps but it's boring. I found a lot of great diet advice on here:

helpforibs.com

Hope it helps.

Very sorry to hear of your difficulties. I have also suffered with IBS predominantly D for very many years and also rely on imodium. Over the past years I have been referred to the Bladder and Bowel clinic and asked whether i was doing any damage with using so much. I was reassured that it is quite safe to continue using. I would recommend that you also seek more advice. Sadly I also have arthritis and have been prescribed codeine which has also helped with the IBS. This has to be prescribed by your doctor so do not in any circumstances try and obtain this yourself. I do strongly recommend you seek more advice. I use imodium in addition to codeine when i have a particularly bad flare up. But you appear to be much younger than me as you are still working. I am also gluten and dairy intolerant and vegan, and i agree it is very difficult to know what to eat. The nurse I saw at the clinic was so kind and understanding, and it was such a great relief to be able to talk about the embarrassing symptoms. As I said i would recommend you get more advice and I wish you well.

Thanks for replying to my first message. I think I need to visit the doctors again and push for more help and possibly some test.

Hi can I ask if you have issues with your gallbladder if this is the case either you have had your gallbladder out or your liver is creating to much bile if this is the case you might have B A M , bile acid malabsorption if this is the case. Colesevelam would be the best medication you will find you get back to near normal life, cutting down on fats in all foods will also help hope this information can help you, but I would need to no more on your symptoms

I take one Imodium a day and that seems to help me.

Loperamide (generic name for Imodium) plus psyllium (Fybogel) to bulk up the stool.
