Hi all, after various tests, investigations, A LOT of struggle and appointments I have received a letter from a gastro specialist saying all my tests are normal including biopsy results...therefore I may have "functional gut disease". I have tried to google what this is but no answer...can anyone help me? Is this just another term to say they don't know what it is?

Yes, this is what they sometimes say now rather than IBS. They're saying there's nothing medically wrong so it's functional ie mobility too fast IBS-D or too slow IBS -C.
Yes in car terms there is nothing wrong with the engine but the timing is out. 7 out of 10 times it's functional I am told (might be more), at least u know nothing serious is wrong and hopefully this can bring some inner peace to help fix the issue.
Yeah I agree with the first two replies - that's good that nothing is seriously wrong but your GP/the specialist should have provided you with more information/advice. Has he prescribed you any medications or treatments?
I think it's a made up word the Gastro guy made up for an ailment they cannot name!!
I had the same sort of letter a couple of weeks back. It's them basically saying it's not serious and it's ibs. During my appointment I got told "you have IBS just live with it, it's your life now"
Thank you all for your replies.
I have since seen the doctor and he was surprised I haven't been diagnosed with IBD as he was thinking I had...
I am on no medication at the moment as noone knows what it is.. he will be referring me to a specialist who specialises in functional disorders as they don't think it is IBS at the moment as mine is mainly stomach issues.
I really hope I get some effective treatment or something to help me as it's taken over my life...
I wish you all the best too and hope we all get some relief from our health problems 💕
Hi there, there is no such disease as functional gut disease... that is a diagnosis made by somebody who has no clue what is wrong with you... the body's normal state is health, just let it perform without interference... it's actually a nonsense to take medication for IBS, it will worsen your problems over time, i speak out of experience, had IBS (diagnosed by "reductio ad absurdum" only after all my tests, and they were many, were all negative) over a 5 years period (think it was triggered, maintained and accentuated by overwhelming stress, poor diet and lack of exercise) by the end of which period i literally thought I will die. I healed myself last year, in a short period of 3 months, by avoiding any type of medication (not even an aspirin), avoiding any type of medical doctor, changing my diet to a raw organic vegetarian one and exercising everyday for at least 30 minutes. YOUR BODY IS SMART, IT WILL HEAL ITSELF, YOU JUST HAVE TO LET IT WORK AND DO NOT INTERFERE STUPIDLY!!! Since then I feel much stronger, have an outstanding physical and psychological stamina, my digestion got back to normal (after horrifying diarrhea bouts) and life is wonderful again! No more IBS - by eradicating the root causes of it, and not trying to repress the symptoms... This guy helped me a lot, with his short explanations, he made me change my lifestyle and although I do not personally know him, I am very thankful I got over him on Youtube accidentally... life changing experience if you suffer from a dis-ease and do not know the REAL causes... hope it helps you too: youtu.be/MYKdLeL3SGo
