GOOD MORNING ALL,

ok my story is ive just been diagnosed with IBS 4 weeks ago, the symptoms i have are on my right-hand side of my stomach, it goes from sharp crippling discomfort to dull uncomfortable ache,/that doesn't seem to be going away>24 hrs a day. Im do have flatulence i seem to have bouts of this, anyway.

im confused to what to do to help myself get rid of this pain, it simply doing me in now.

I'm also very very tired, seem to have no energy everything is a struggle to get moving?

are these NORMAL symptoms for IBS?

I have contacted my doctor again, and have just had blood test, now waiting for the results?

I have looked for information out there on the web??

what are the best things i can do to help myself??

all help will really be received with thanks.

Hi there,

I had IBS for 25 years, and I have recovered from it. Everyone's IBS is different, but you may find some of the articles on my blog help you move forward. I suggest this as a starting point: sickofibs.com/ibs-symptoms/...

There are others on food intolerance, Sibo and Candida, triggers that may help you too.

Alison:)

this sounds exactly like what I have. It's called Hepatic Flexure Syndrome and means that a bit of air gets trapped into the bend of your colon, on the right side of your stomach. This prevents stuff to pass through, causing swelling and pain.

Your colon will most probably not be shaped like it's shown on biology charts. Virtually no one's is.

For me it helps to diminish air production in the colon: don't swallow air when eating/drinking; no fizzy drinks; no gas forming foods (beans, garlic); not feeding the bacteria in your gut (FODMAP).

Also a low fibre diet works so there's less volume to get trapped behind the air bubble. (this diet also gives lots of energy)

Then there's coaching the air bubble along the bends: lie on your right side (yes), turn to your back, lift your pelvis to the air ("bridge"?) and massage your stomach. Any gurgling sound is good! It may hurt a bit though, sorry. If you pass gass that's victory.

Hepatic Flexure Syndrome has a twin: Splenic Flexure Syndrome, at the other side of the body and this one is a bit more known amongst doctors. Still it's not very well known and doctors don't like it much because it's more of a functional failure than mechanical. So don't be surprised when your dr. doesn't know it or doesn't "believe in it". Just educate yourself in how the colon/digestive system works and try to think along with it and device little trials for yourself.

Other words that helped me were "slow transit colon" and "bmm", "big mass movement", "motility disorder". Hope this helps.

edit to add: there will always be gas production in the colon. Your bacterial flora does this. Reducing their foods helps but there will always be a bit of gas.

Hi.

I had a stitch like pain in my upper left side for nearly a year. After a colonoscopy showed only diverticulosis, and blood tests were all good, it was decided it was gas etc trapped in my splenic flexure. The doctor suggested " fiddling about " with my diet. I did some research and cut out as many foods as possible that fermented in the large colon. In particular wheat, lactose, some fruit and veg and some forms of sugar and alcohol. As the tests

were showing nothing serious ,I also stopped worrying about it.

After a few months the pain disappeared and I have been able to reintroduce moderate amounts of some things but I have mostly.stayed clear of wheat and lactose .

It was hard for me to believe that something so simple was causing me so much pain so it was important that I ruled out more serious problems by having a colonoscopy.

Good luck.
