WHAT HAPPENS ?

Hi guys

I was just wondering if anyone knows what happens in an appointment with a gastroenterologist?? I just don't want to be taken by surprise by anything.

Depends what you are seeing one for. You might be weighed, bp and urine sample done. Go over your symptoms with the doc and decide on tests and treatment if needed.

What's awkward ?

in reply tobantam12

the fact that I may have to give a urine sample just makes me want to cringe . I've just found it so awkward handing the mini bottle over to the doctor

A nurse will do it all before you see the doc. If you don't want to wee while your are there get a bottle from your GPs surgery and take it with, I always do that.

That's a good idea. Thanks,I'll probably do that

Hi. It could be worse, I had to hand a sperm sample in and the nurse was my neighbour, now that was awkward!

I saw the funny side, and it's a good story. Pride seems to be the first casualty of illness!

All of my visits were discussion based. No 'pants off' until the colonoscopy. That being said, the lab people got urine, blood and poop samples from me. They're used to it. Just be as open as possible, using the words you need to. They went to school to study this stuff - if you have to describe your poops and farts in great detail it's all okay.

you're right but humans cant help but worry. You're right though, they've been studying this for a lifetime and if they felt so grossed out about it I'm sure they wouldn't still be there. Thank you runswithdogs :)

I had weight and bp with nurse and then discussion with consultant which included abdominal exam and a roll Ono side and bottom exam which idbeen wotid about for weeks but was seconds and didn't feel a thing

thanks purplewoman, you've made me feel less anxious xx

Hi at this first appointment they will ask you about what you have been through/going through and how it affects you.How many times you go to loo and what its like.

Meds and they will want to examine you.

They found that I have nerve dammage, a rectocile and reduced squeeze. The rectocile has made my rectum short so i get a lot of incontinaence.

if you get a diagnosis you may be sent to other places for treetment. Your meds may be changed to better meds.

You will get follow-up appointments to see them.

Very Best Wishes
