Hi, I have just been diagnosed with diverticulitis but habe not been given any advise by the docs on what to do, what diet I'm supposed to have. Can anyone help me with that?

Also do any of you who have it feel a pressure in your bottom like you need to go to the toilet all the time, is that normal it's driving me mad??

Hi.i was also diagnosed with Diverticulitis along with IBSC some time ago .The diverticulitis being the result of many years of varying degrees of constipation and straining .(now 67). I follow a modified FODMAPS DIET ,ie no onions ,no tomatoes .very little dairy ,pastry ,bread .Restricted range of fruits and veg .trial and error have led me to this that suits me but we are all different .For me the main thing is to keep my "lazy gut "moving regularly ,to avoid constipation ,so not too much fibre for instance and regular small meals and exercise . I also take a daily maintenance dose of lactulose a benign laxative that encourages more liquid into the gut to ease the transit and encourage peristalsis .Hope that helps ! If you get an attack of diverticulitis you will know as the pain is intense but a course of Anti biotics deals with it .So I always carry them with me particularly abroad .Touch wood haven't had an attack for some time but it strikes without warning or logic ! Also have regular Acupuncture aimed at relaxing the gut .Don't ask me how it works but seems to help me !

I have diverticulitis and IBS and when diagnosed got no help what so ever. I bought myself a book on the subject so I knew what I was up against. I manage fairly well - I take acidophilus daily - have done for a number of years now and wouldn't be without it. You need fibre to help transit. Because I also have IBS I limit the amount of fibre I take as too much isn't good for IBS. I have a few hits and misses but really I manage quite well . I know a lot of people are far worse than I am for which I am eternally grateful.

What brand of acidophilus do you take? The ones I've looked at so far are not suitable (I contacted the manufacturer to see if the capsules would survive the journey through the digestive system. All said they wouldn't guarantee it).

I get mine from Holland and Barratt (penny sale time). Mega potency that contain 3 million active cultures. They need to live in the fridge. If I go away I buy a special one from them that will survive without keeping in the fridge. I only take one a day. They build up the immune system - very rare I get colds these days.

H&B were one of the retailers who said they couldn't guarantee safe passage

I have never asked the question - all I can say is that for me I think they work. What you got to lose -

This is a good description of the issue. The point to take from is that most people have Diverticular disease but few have issues.

I am new to this site and have suffered from haemorrhoids ,IBS and diverticulitis all my life and now 59 ,have learned through pain and suffering what works for me and what to avoid in relation to food as too little fibre can cause a flareup (constipation) , and too much can cause sudden diarroea and feeling of wanting to use the loo all the time and after 3 movements to flush out the system , if I do not stop the movements by binding with co-codamol and buscopan - I tend to pass red blood from irritated piles. So when travelling I carry an assortment of meds including mebrivine, buscopan ,paracetamol, ibuprofen and co-codamol for various purposes including loosening and binding my system.I need to be close to a loo at all times and lead a more or less normal life - although some flareups need antibiotics such as metronazanole and on a few occasions have had to have 2 antibiotics at the same time intravenously in hospital. The only surgery I have had is for piles where I was told once they are dealt with they will never worry me again , unfortunately this is not the case because when my digestive system goes into spasm and meltdown , everything goes haywire ,but by knowing what to do tends to reverse " normal" flares within a few hours ,during which time it is best for me to work from home and avoid stress of commuting.
