TB meds and alcohol/drugs

Hi, I'm sure this has been asked before but I couldn't find any posts with the search function.

What exactly is the situation with taking recreational drugs and alcohol while on TB treatment? I understand that both TB meds and drugs/alcohol stress the liver. My doctor first told me not to do any drugs or take any alcohol. The leaflet and and another TB nurse told me that a drink here and there should be fine.

It is quite difficult for me not to drink alcohol because most social situations evolve around it. I have been trying to reduce a lot and compensate with green tea, citrus fruits, lots of water etc which are all supposed to help the liver function normally.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips or experiences around this?

Many thanks!

Hi copythat24. It is true that TB medication can have very serious impacts on the liver which can be both more likely and more severe if you drink alcohol or take other drugs.

Certainly it is best to avoid them.

However, we recognise that this is not always possible for some people. Therefore it is important to make clear that you should take your TB medication even if you are unable to stop drinking or using other drugs.

Your doctor will keep a close eye on your treatment and any side effects so they can take action if your liver is coming under stress. It is important to let them know about any alcohol or drugs you may use. They won't judge you, they just need to know so they can make the best decisions about your treatment. They may also be able to advise you about sources of support.

I hope this helps? Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Best wishes,

Helen
