The forgotten effects of thyrotropin-releasing hormone: metabolic functions and medical applications
An interesting (and quite long) paper. It certainly is true that you can spend a very long time reading about thyroid and hardly ever see TRH mentioned.

Iron Deficiency May Predict Greater Risk for Hypothyroxinemia: A Retrospective Cohort Study of Pregnant Women in China
One of the parts of the thyroid jigsaw that is most often repeated here is the importance of iron levels. Here, in the context of pregnancy, another paper highlighting the importance of adequate iron. Yet, most of the time, we hear of standard treatment being ferrous sulphate - and the difficulty people

Thyroid hormone replacement: an iatrogenic problem
Anyone have access to the Wiley Online Library or the PDF of this article? Would love to get my hands on it! Abstract: “Thyroid hormone replacement is one of the very few medical treatments devised in the 19th century that still survive. It is safe, very effective and hailed as a major success by

Pilot Neonatal Screening Program for Central Congenital Hypothyroidism: Evidence of Significant Detection
I suspect that there would be a high voter turnout and a landslide victory if the change proposed by this paper were put to a ballot of members here! OF COURSE newborns should have both TSH and FT4 tested. OF COURSE TSH-only misses central hypothyroidism. [i]

Low serum free thyroxine level is correlated with lipid profile in depressive patients with suicide attempt
I really don't know what to say about this abstract. Unless I am getting it entirely wrong, don't total cholesterol and triglycerides tend to rise with low FT4? Anyway, it has certainly previously been reported that it is vital to consider the possibility of statins causing or worsening depression

Help with getting hold of a paper
Recently someone asked if I had a copy, or knew where to get a copy, of the paper below. Must admit, the title does make it sound interesting though possibly the reality will let us down. As I couldn't help (and my interest has also been piqued), does anyone here have a copy? [i]Neth J Med. 1981;24(

Iron deficiency is associated with Hypothyroxinemia and Hypotriiodothyroninemia in the Spanish general adult population: Di@bet.es study
Interesting - patients found to have reduced FT4 and reduced FT3 associated with lower ferritin levels. But without change of TSH. Surely, if the TSH test is so exquisitely sensitive and is the best test for hypothyroidism, it would reveal the lower FT4 and FT3 levels regardless of ferritin level?

Letter to the Editor: The Ultimate Proof of Log-linear Nature of TSH-Free T4 Relationship by Intraindividual Analysis of a Large Population
I think diogenes might be well already aware of this - but is also likely to have a firm opinion. That the authors of this letter feel it necessary to make this poke-in-your-eye obvious statement is a very sharp criticism: we want to emphasize a critical fact that it is impossible for the TSH value

Intravenous and intratracheal thyrotropin releasing hormone and its analog taltirelin reverse opioid-induced respiratory depression
All too often we ignore TRH ( thyrotropin releasing hormone) - despite its fundamental role in telling the pituitary to produce TSH. It is left out of so many discussions. This paper is now suggesting that TRH could have a role as a medicine in its own right! If the concepts make sense, perhaps these

Selenium deficiency in mineral-rich mid-Western Australia
Seems this should be filed in the "you should take enough of what you need enough of" section. But unless someone actually either tries to see of there is any change from supplementing, or tests and determines need from the results, it does seem ever so easy to walk on past this sort of issue. Yet again

Update on Endo appointment this morning! (warning long post!)
I think I am still reeling at the moment! frustration then turned to tears (not whilst in her office fortunately). My advice is please do not go and see the endo and registrar I saw this morning. I can let you know from where by PM if you wish. Basically they both said that I am not hypothyroid, my pituitary

How TSH and FT3 change during the year
A new paper in Thyroid showing changes in TSH and FT3 over the year. Thyroid Vol. 28, No. 4 Thyroid Dysfunction: Hypothyroidism, Thyrotoxicosis, and Thyroid Function Tests Seasonal Changes in Serum Thyrotropin Concentrations Observed from Big Data Obtained During Six Consecutive Years from 2010 to 2015

Lab Results: Amphetamines Skewing Results?
I will be following up with the Endocrinologist tomorrow, it will be our second meeting. In our first meeting he was unsure if I have a thyroid problems but suspected adult growth hormone deficiency. I shared an article on how GH deficiency can mask subclinical/mild Central hypothyroidism and was hoping

My sister has just received her results from the Blue Horizon Thyroid Genetic Panel test. They use a traffic light system when giving the feedback and two of my sisters results are flagged up as red “a potentially negative impact” either due to both variants being present or a “wild type” result that

Thyroid antibodies
Hi all, was trying to get hold of my results for thyroid antibodies and was wondering which test would be used and why others would be left out and which one would diagnose which autoimmune disease. I feel a bit confused by it all. Also Known As Thyroid Autoantibodies Antithyroid Antibodies Antimicrosomal
