Propylthiouracil - Safety of long term use.
I have been taking
Propylthiouracil
for a year now. I have been advised that I should now consider RAI or surgery as my consultant does not advise the continued long term use of medication in someone of my age (56). Does anyone have any experience of taking the medication long term?

THIONAMIDE-INDUCED AGRANULOCYTOSIS: A RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF 36 PATIENTS WITH HYPERTHYROIDISM
Methimazole was prone to causing more serious agranulocytosis than
propylthiouracil
. High thyroid hormone was unlikely to play a role in the ADR. Patient education is important. Keywords: agranulocytosis; antithyroid drug; hyperthyroidism; methimazole;
propylthiouracil

Graves disease.
The medication (
propylthiouracil
) helped, but the Graves came back after 2 years. I took this again for a longer period and eventually was taken off of it. Five years ago, I became unwell and, after a battle, managed to once again get a diagnosis of Graves disease.

Triiodothyronine maintains cardiac transverse-tubule structure and function
They managed to induce the heart issues with just eight weeks of
propylthiouracil
(PTU). There are members who have had low thyroid hormone, including low T3, for years before receiving treatment. And all too many still have not got there.

PTU (Propylthiouracil)
Has anyone been prescribed PTU (
Propylthiouracil
) for a low TSH? My TSH is 0.01, T4 11.5 and T3 5.8. My Endo wants to put me on this one as i am trying for a baby and it's the safe one. Has anyone had any side effects?

Unable to get medicine in UK
I have had an over active thyroid problem since 1989, for which I was prescribed
Propylthiouracil
by the Chinese specialists. Every year I go back to China and while there I see the doctor and get my medicine.

The longer the antithyroid drug is used, the lower the relapse rate in Graves' disease: a retrospective multicenter cohort study in Korea
Many have reported here that they have received an antithyroid medicine for a long period (whether carbimazole or
propylthiouracil
). However, long-term use of an anti-thyroid medicine is frequently denied. There is often considerable pressure to choose RAI or thyroidectomy.

A newcomer’s experience of the challenges thyroid conditions can bring.
At 24, my thyroid was still unable to be controlled with
Propylthiouracil
, I would always become overactive, and I’d had enough. My specialist offered me two options- radiotherapy to shut down my thyroid or a total thyroidectomy.

What could be wrong with me!?
medication for IVF embryo transfer due to my partner previously having cancer a scan showed my uterus had fluid inside so the cycle was stopped for investigation (which I cannot have until my thyroid levels are under control) after this happened I went to my doctors who ran these blood tests - was given 50g

Undecided on treatment
I have been diagnosed with Graves and I’m currently on
Propylthiouracil
. I would like to get pregnant at some point so if I go down the tablet route and end up in remission, is it likely to come straight back? Can anyone help? Thanks.

Has anyone taken Propylthiouracil PTU rather than Carbimazole?
Hi I'm wanting to hear from people who changed from carbimazole to PTU because they had side effects from it. Carbimazole causes joint pain and lead legs for me also headaches when I first started taking it I've been on it for around 5 years and just started PTU a couple of days ago and am worried about

Has my thyroid gone haywire?

AGRANULOCYTOSIS IN THE MIDST OF COVID-19
Agranulocytosis is a rare and potentially life-threatening side-effect of antithyroid drugs (carbimazole, methimazole and
propylthiouracil
). The chance of developing agranulocytosis is 0.2-0.5% (Vicentre et al, 2017) and in most cases it happens within the first three months of treatment.

I was told I had Graves, but TSH Receptor antibody tests just in. Was it Hashi's all along?
Result: TSH Receptor Antibodies <1.1 IU/L (Range: < 1.75) I was diagnosed as hyperthyroid in 1987, was given Carbimazole and
Propylthiouracil
for 2 years, then Radio Active Iodine Treatment in 1989. I have been hypothyroid ever since. I was told at the time that I had Graves disease.

Familial dysalbuminemic hyperthyroxinemia confounding management of coexistent autoimmune thyroid disease
However,
propylthiouracil
treatment even in low dosage (100 mg daily) resulted in profound hypothyroidism (TSH: 138 mU/L; FT4: 4.8 pmol/L), prompting its discontinuation and recommencement of thyroxine.
