There have been quite a few posts about propylthiouracil (PTU). This search finds many - but some will only be casual references and others might be missed. Nonetheless, a start.

How long did they take till you started to feel a bit better off them and do you have any side affects from them??

Hi. I am lucky. I don’t have any real side effects as such. I think I felt better after 5 weeks. Originally was on 200mg for 4 weeks then 150mg. What is your situation? R u coping?

Well i was prescribed carbimazole 2 weeks ago they made me sick so prescribed me propylthiouracil now so I'm praying now I will start to feel better soon because I've been so ill the past couple of months I just want to feel a bit normal haha

That happened to me as well. The carbimazole gave me migraines, nausea and loss of taste. I flip flopped on and off the carbimazole for 6 months before I got PTU. The chemical composition of PTU is not the same as the carbimazole and generally speaking if a patient can’t tolerate one drug then they will tolerate the alternative. So I hope that gives u some hope. I am taking mine at 6am, 2pm and 10pm. One tablet at each of those times.

I also have been offered liver function tests weekly. After 3 months on the PTU my liver has been ok and there is a higher chance of liver damage on the PTU. I do my liver function tests monthly now.

When I had my blood test done for thyroid and everything they said there was a slight problem with my liver but nothing to be concerned about but I wasn't taking any medication then... you take tablets to treat something then it causes something else 😒

Being hyper can cause elevated liver function in itself. This also happened to me. My levels were elevated even before I started taking the anti thyroid drugs. Some of my liver levels were elevated but never excessively so I would say it’s kinda normal for liver levels to be elevated on an untreated person. Once I took the anti thyroid drugs my levels came down on my liver function test. My ferritin was also elevated and this caused constipation. Once my thyroid levels came down the constipation went away. My calcium was elevated also and these levels came down to normal once on the anti thyroid drugs

I go to the gym or I use too. I had a tremor first. I am soooo hot. I had constipation and burning diorehea. I didn’t even know u could have burning diorehea. How I got diagnosed was my ankles were swollen for 3 days and then my face swelled. I lost all my muscles. Yes I have had the body aches. That’s isn’t nice. I had mine in my spine and it felt like flu. I eat 4,000-5,000 calories a day. Always hungry so have lost nothing except all my muscles. My body is not handling blood sugars well so have body fat. I hope others will join this chat as there are others on this site using PTU. I posted a while ago about PTU but didn’t get a great response but there are people using PTU. You could also put your post on the Graves site. If u ever want to chat you can PM me. I was nice to talk with you.
