Help with getting hold of a paper
Recently someone asked if I had a copy, or knew where to get a copy, of the paper below. Must admit, the title does make it sound interesting though possibly the reality will let us down. As I couldn't help (and my interest has also been piqued), does anyone here have a copy? [i]Neth J Med. 1981;24(

Letter to the Editor: The Ultimate Proof of Log-linear Nature of TSH-Free T4 Relationship by Intraindividual Analysis of a Large Population
I think diogenes might be well already aware of this - but is also likely to have a firm opinion. That the authors of this letter feel it necessary to make this poke-in-your-eye obvious statement is a very sharp criticism: [u] we want to emphasize a critical fact that it is impossible for the TSH value

Selenium deficiency in mineral-rich mid-Western Australia
Seems this should be filed in the "you should take enough of what you need enough of" section. But unless someone actually either tries to see of there is any change from supplementing, or tests and determines need from the results, it does seem ever so easy to walk on past this sort of issue. Yet again

Update on Endo appointment this morning! (warning long post!)
I think I am still reeling at the moment! frustration then turned to tears (not whilst in her office fortunately). My advice is please do not go and see the endo and registrar I saw this morning. I can let you know from where by PM if you wish. Basically they both said that I am not hypothyroid, my pituitary

Intravenous and intratracheal thyrotropin releasing hormone and its analog taltirelin reverse opioid-induced respiratory depression
All too often we ignore TRH ( thyrotropin releasing hormone) - despite its fundamental role in telling the pituitary to produce TSH. It is left out of so many discussions. This paper is now suggesting that TRH could have a role as a medicine in its own right! If the concepts make sense, perhaps these

Lab Results: Amphetamines Skewing Results?
I will be following up with the Endocrinologist tomorrow, it will be our second meeting. In our first meeting he was unsure if I have a thyroid problems but suspected adult growth hormone deficiency. I shared an article on how GH deficiency can mask subclinical/mild Central hypothyroidism and was hoping

Thyroid antibodies
Hi all, was trying to get hold of my results for thyroid antibodies and was wondering which test would be used and why others would be left out and which one would diagnose which autoimmune disease. I feel a bit confused by it all. Also Known As Thyroid Autoantibodies Antithyroid Antibodies Antimicrosomal

New Research Shows TSH Test an Unreliable Test of Thyroid Function - Press Release

New paper showing inadequacy of TSH as a diagnostic tool and a method for best assessment of treatment
We have a new paper out as below, discussing the relationships between TSH, FT4 and FT3 and the need to use all parameters in determining best treatment for those of thyroid hormone supplementation. It is available freely to download if required. We're trying to get a modelling programme that would automatically

Anyone diagnosed with secondary hypothyroidism here? TRH test?
Hi I've been told I should be investigated for secondary / central hypothyroidism. I saw an endocrinologist who dismissed this himself, as my other hormones were in check, but TSH,free t4 and free t3 all low end of normal. Has anyone got this? If so how were you diagnosed and treated? Did anyone manage

Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid Axis Set Point Alterations Are Associated With Body Composition in Androgen-Deprived Men
Abstract Objective: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) given to men with prostate cancer is associated with metabolically adverse changes in body composition leading to insulin resistance, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. We investigated prospectively whether androgen deprivation

The multiple genetic causes of central hypothyroidism
OK - so it takes a bit of thought. But if you rely exclusively on TSH, as we see so often, it is simply impossible to diagnose central hypothyroidism. Yet it becomes fairly simple when FT4 and FT3 are also tested. At least, it should be enough to raise the question as to why the results are discordant
