If we don’t talk about value, cancer drugs will become terminal for health systems
The recent call by US oncologists for patients to demand reductions in the price new drugs has prompted an interesting article at 'The Conversation', which includes some rather stunning examples of huge price variations for the same new drug, depending on how the drug is approved for use and what competition

April Hematology Times: "How vitamin D fights lymphoma" and "Low doses of imatinib promote hematopoiesis"
Some articles from Hematology Times (free membership) on research that may be worth keeping an eye on:
How vitamin D fights lymphoma
http://www.hematologytimes.com/p_article.do?id=5010 Might answer the mystery of why CLL patients with low levels of Vitamin D have a poorer prognosis.

The future for CLL?
In the last few years, we've seen some great advances in the efficacy of new treatments for CLL, with very encouraging progress towards a cure. There has even been talk that we may have achieved the breakthrough that Imatinib (perhaps better know as Gleevec) was for a sister leukaemia to CLL - CML or

Chemo makes resistant cancer stem cells???
This would be quite an interesting paradigm shift from what I understood was the prime reason for therapy drug resistance. It is commonly assumed, in CLL/SLL, that clones are born with different degrees of resistance to drugs and lay in hiding only to emerge after therapy or a time lapse. Speculation

Musculosceletal pain even after TKI treatment
I thought that this might have relevance to those of us in the future who may be discontinuing ibrutinib. This article was about another TKI imatinib, but it is worth noting here since it seems to occur in 30% of patients: [i]Discontinuation of therapy is being explored in patients with chronic myelogenous

Has anyone had any experience of Afatinib?
In order to support a submission to the Scottish medicines consortium (SMC) for the availability of
Afatinib
(Gilotrif) which is a targeted (biological) therapy it would be helpful to hear from anyone that may have experience of it either through your Consultant or as part of a clinical trial

Just a quick update
In the meantime I went to Christies for a second opinion, well really to see if I could get
Afatinib
. I will have to do IV chemo first though.

Not the news I wanted to hear :((
There is a drug called
Afatinib
which will be used as a third line but at present it is not approved by NICE. For me, they are giving me 2 months to see how much/fast the tumour is progressing. They will then switch my treatment.

Day 2 of taking Afatinib
It has now spread to the spleen & he goes for a bone scan next week as they think it has also spread to his bones. He started taking the new unlicensed drug
Afatinib
yesterday & so far no side effects! He has been told that the side effects can be more severe than Tarceva.

Does anyone know anybody who has been offered a new drug called Afatinib? My partner has been offered this as Tarceva has stopped working.
