CHANGING ROOM CHAT...DECEMBER ! Time to Get Your Skates on !

Your body can't tell the difference between bending over to pick up your shopping bag or and bending down to pick up a weight”!

This is something that still applies, even though it was part of a post from a year ago!

Okay people, here we are nearly at the end of the first week of a brand new month and... with the first of a set of fun posts to keep us all strong and supple as we head towards that time of the year where things may be moving faster than we might wish!

Here I am, after some very frenetic few days building up to yesterday!

The weather may be against us... and keeping us indoors... but chores and errands till have to be done, with, for some of us the added delights of winter shopping!

I am whizzing around so much right now and trying to incorporate mini workouts somewhere and anywhere.. yesterday... kilometers of hospital corridors, as Mr OF was admitted for his operation. I used stairs and not lifts and I walked safely, but briskly. I just wish I had recorded the distance!

But, I digress.

TV Christmas advertising, dominates the screen,,, and here there and everywhere right now, we are being encouraged to get out there and to spend our money”

So... I got to thinking... uh oh! Why not use that, as part of a workout!

I am being perfectly serious , our shopping errands often involve plenty of walking, carrying, lifting, bending, stretching etc.

Whatever you are buying , part of the act of buying, shopping means you are walking. Walking is one of the best exercises ever, we say many, many times on here, so so good for us!

So... if we are heading to the shops and we want to get a significant workout... how can we achieve it, ( and get the shopping done)?

Well, making a plan may be a good idea... know what you need and where to get it; maximise the walking but minimise the time wasting?

* First off, don't drive, if you feel the shopping visit does not need a car to get the load home! Maybe walk to the shops? It is all too easy for many of us to get into the car for a distance that really does not necessitate it.

* When you get there... use stairs, not lifts or escalators.... think of all those steps you are getting in! Yeayyy!

*When you are where you want to be, if you have got the car ?

Take the long way around... park further away...if at a shopping centre, then go in at an entrance where you have to walk to your first shop. ( I shall park far away from the main hospital entrance for all my visits this week ).

* Brisk pace and eye exercise as you window-shop en route.

* Unless you have a HUGE grocery shop...then use a basket not a trolley. Carrying the weight around.. changing arms as you go, or a bag in both hands,,, all giving those arms a workout. You are reaching up for things, bending down to get things from lower shelves, reaching and stretching.

Choosing new gear...including exercise stuff?

* Trying on time, can be a sneaky workout time, some bends, some stretches, arms up and down, twisting turning and general preening, as you find the perfect outfit! Also a good time to relax the shoulders, a few shoulder rolls... easy, lower back exercise, to keep you going, too!

* You can use your Yoga too... waiting at tills, perusing the choice of goods.. be body aware, breathing and positioning. Stand relaxed but correctly... if the queue is long then neck exercises , breathing patterns and leg stretches... We may get funny looks but who minds that?

Okay... all done?

Take your wares to the car yourself... no offer of help to be accepted... ( unless the load really is too much ). Your workout... your way !

Some ideas there then? I do feel that we all do a lot more exercise than we think, in our daily activities and focusing on them a tad more, in these very busy few weeks, well, that has to be good...Every Little Helps , as a well known supermarket used to say!

Let us know your thoughts and any tips or ideas too. I am sure some of you have some ideas to share:)

P.S

A few lower back exercises, after all your efforts would probably be useful ? Adriene, in her YWA sessions does lovely relaxed lower back ones!

One called... Lower Back Love... it is so good !

Time built in for coffee and snacks too ! { I know that @MissUnderstanding), would agree) :)

Mr OF's operation went exactly to plan and all seems to be looking very positive. More walking at the Hospital today and for the next few days... I think I may take my running shoes for the outside bits!

I’m so glad to hear that the operation went well. Sending MrOF and you many best wishes for his recuperation and onward treatment.

Please don’t forget, amongst all that hectic and busy visiting, caring and shopping, to take care of yourself and schedule in good food and rest.

Hi, Floss.. I hate shopping! Online only if possible..😊. But I’m with you all the way on the rest of your post.. always take the stairs as I hate lifts too.. and always park far away from town if I ever go.. mainly so I don’t have to pay for parking.. there’s another thing I hate (or maybe I’m just too mean🤔).

All the everyday bending and stretching though.. it makes the gardening and even cleaning more enjoyable because you know it’s good for you.. I’m still on with decorating (hall, stairs and landing now, so a long job).. lots of bending and stretching and I know it’s good for me because I’m tired and aching..🤣

So pleased to hear that Mr OF’s op went well.. wishing him a speedy recovery.. and hope you will look after yourself while you are supporting him.. take care..💐x

You do sound as if you are getting plenty pf stretching and bending, flexing and everything in.. Loads of stamina work there too!

I used a lot of stairs today as I visited Mr OF twice!!!

I do feel as you say... doing those jobs that feel as if they are more enjoyable than they might be, is an added bonus to the exercise!!

Thank you so much for your good wishes! x

So good to hear the operation has gone well! Sending you further healing wishes. ❤️‍🩹

It is also busy here in our household, trying to get ready for the season, with me still sniffling and coughing along. But it’s getting better.

So I’ll need to step up my exercises soon again and these reminders and tips will be handy.

Oh goodness... I felt sure you would be feeling much better now... there are so many bug things going around and I think folk taking longer to shake them off!

This exercises will wait and hopefully you will feel well for the festive days!

Thanks for the good wishes... he is doing really well and maybe home sooner than we thought!

Yeah, it’s been one of the longest lingering colds I have experienced. Low level coughing and sniffling by now, but it just continued for such a long time.

I bet Covid has something to do with it, even if not directly (I tested negative).

Not fun..plus the new Covid strains are not always being detected by home testing kits...added hazard alongside the raised numbers of flu and Nova virus! X

I’m so pleased to hear that Mr OH’s op went well Oldfloss , and you seem to be getting lots of exercise going to and from the hospital. I hope you can take advantage of a bit of chillax time while you can too, busier times are ahead.

I’m still doing stretching exercises at home and am pleased that the physio exercises helped the glute problem.

Yes. He's home now, so less hospital walking! The stormy weather has slowed everything down.Lots of indoor workouts though!

Glad your stretches are working...and that the physio exercise is really helping..

As you say...busy times are coming!

Thank you xxx

I only went and fell over while walking on Saturday, turning my ankle and then slipping on the wet pavement while trying to save myself. I think I’ve stretched the already impinged tendon on my right shoulder, and bruised the elbow too. Ankle strengthening to be added to list!
