Injured runner - first post

Hi everyone. I've stopped in here because I've realised, rather too late, how important strength and flex is going to be in my life.

Have been doing C25k and then B210k, culminating in my first 10k race on Sunday. Came in ahead of my planned time but at the cost of a ruptured plantar fascia. For those who have come from that forum, you might know that I've suffered a lot with my tendons, probably from 20 years of obesity and potatoism. :)

So now I start down a road to recovery and losts of strengthening work to try and avoid it happening again.

EDIT - here's a photo of me looking (purposefully) pathetic... haha

Styling the stick! So sorry about your injury but I’m sure with your determination you’ll recover in no time. Good plan re the strength exercises, starting to think the same...

Yes, I'm going to have to be MUCH more attentive to my strength and flex work. I'll get there in whatever time it takes... feels much better today than yesterday so, with any luck, it's a minor tear. Proper advice from the physio will get me going in the right direction. In the meantime, it's crutches! :)

I know it gave you an injury but you have run 10km and got a badge so at least you know what you are capable of. This time of will make you come up with a running and strengthening plan which will greatly help move onto another goal even if it’s running more often for enjoyment. I can imagine it’s hard after being so drive

It is hard, but only because I've found out I love it so much. Still, I'll be back soon. As you say, time to develop a good habit around strength and flex work, which has taken a back seat up to now.

I have just rejoined S&F so that I can follow your antics :)

I think you will enjoy it, I may even do it again.

I started this program in the local park, enjoyed a bit if friendly banter from some kids (actually they thought they were baiting me and were very surprised that I ended up greeting and chatting with them. It was amusing when I met one of them helping his gran with her shopping - he looked really worried that I was going to tell on him) I still see him about the village, he's grown up a bit now )

Anyway, I gave up in the park because it got so busy over the school holidays - whole families were having picnics and cluttering up the benches :) And kids were using the exercise equipment! Well I wasn't going to queue behind small children - apart from me I have never seen anyone over the minimum age of 12 using it :)

Anyway I continued in the house and garden, had to get creative to set up a horizontal bar but it's ready for use when needed

Between swimming, my PT, S&F and whatever the physio gives me to do, I won't have much time to be gloomy! :)

Welcome here. S&F is a good starting point. Try to get some seated cardio in too... there’s lots of choice out there in googleland, just watch them through first as some have too much leg work in them imho.

Welcome to our other little forum. We have have a few in the IC on here at the moment. There are some really good posts about alternative training to keep you going. At the moment we are doing weekly “just one thing. “ It is one movement or exercise to add in a week, it really seems to help everyone build up a S&F routine. Speedy recovery but hopefully you will stay around after as well. Rfc x

Had physio yesterday and found the benefits of proper advice... turns out my physio is a marathon runner. First thing she told me was to take the orthotics out of my shoes as they aren't designed for use with support shoes. Next she had a look at my foot and it turns out it isn't a torn plantar fascia at all - it's one of the other ligaments. So should be back up and running in 3 months. If you can afford it, get some physio from someone who knows runners and running! :)

I feel your pain! I have a metatarsal stress fracture; haven't run since mid-May and it will be a while yet. In the depths of my wallowing and self-pity, I discovered Caroline Jordan on youtube. She is relentlessly cheery and caring, and absolutely on the button. She has a whole series of videos in her 'Hurt Foot Fitness' program. I've tried several of her seated cardio routines and one of her yoga routines. Some have been all chair based, some have been chair and mat; but in all she has been mindful of injury and at no point have I been weight bearing in the workouts. Sometimes I do them with my ortho boot and a trainer, sometimes barefoot. I can highly recommend them. I'm not the first to discover her on these forums, nor the first to recommend her. Speedy healing, and happy workouts in the meantime. Good luck.

Hi - I was actively looking for you Pianism, to see how things were going - so I was very sad to find you are on IC ... although great that you are in this forum so your dieting and strenthening can continue!

I have had PF injuries in the past and it's terrible. Even had a twinge today... so went for a run (!)....

I do hope you have a quick and successful recovery and are back jogging around soon.

PB x

Bless - thank you. Not going anywhere, so will still be posting on any successes I have. I actually made a mistake above - the estimated time to start running is only 6 weeks. But there's plenty I can do in the meantime. Did 40 minutes on the exercise bike on Saturday without any discomfort, so can still keep up with my cardio. And my PT has designed me some sessions to do that won't stress my foot. Plus I've just found out that there's a free weekly yoga class where I work, so I'm going to go along to that and see if I can do any of it without risk.
