Looking for experience that others have had with stem cell injections for knee arthritis. My doctor told me that my knee pain is from arthritis but I am not bad enough for surgery. My insurance company will not pay for the stem cell injection stating that it is experimental. It is really expensive. Do stem cells help?

This sounds like it might be a popular subject for future discussion. If a lot of people are interested we can set up an "AskMeAnything" session with an expert. Do you know anyone who has tried it?

Mayo Clinic research showed stem cell injections into knees with mild to moderate arthritis could help pain....don't know if any longer term benefit.

I heard that the Pain Doctors were doing injections for knee pain to avoid surgery. Has anyone heard about it?

There are different type of medicine that can be injected into a knee joint to help decrease pain from arthritis. The most common is a steroid medicine. Sometimes that injection helps for months, sometimes only for a few days or even not at all. Another medication is 'viscosupplementation', which is a medication which improves the 'lubrication'. Doctors can also inject cells from your body: platelet rich plasma (PRP) or bone marrow aspirate concentrate---this is taking cells from your body which are rich in granules that might decrease inflammation and make your knee feel better. Unfortunately we don't have evidence that PRP or even stem cells reverse early arthritis.
